Glenn brings up a great point

But nonetheless, all nine Justices specifically said the right is individual, and thus rejected the "collective right" position on the Second Amendment, a position that's been the mainstay of gun-control groups, newspaper editorialists, and lower federal courts for decades, and one that was presented by those adherents as so obviously correct that those arguing for an individual right were called "frauds" and shills for the NRA.

When historians attack

Or, I didn't like the outcome so I'll use ad hominem attacks instead

My favorite part is this, which should have been at the very beginning of the article so I wouldn't have bothered with the rest

Constitutional doctrine is properly ever-evolving, but that evolution ought not to be shaped by manufactured provenance masquerading as scholarship.

Ah, yes. The living constitution. Which is like a living contract between your mortgage company and you. I know we agreed on 6.5%, but the contract is living so now it's 19.4% and you're required to clean our local branch office.

The funny thing is that it is capable of evolving. The founders had a good first try, however not all their ideas have worked perfectly nor did they cover all the bases. They, being rather intelligent people, realized they couldn't be perfect so they came up with a pretty good system that allowed the people to modify the Constitution if the need arose. The modification wasn't to be done by a few judges, but by a vast majority of the people.

I don't know what I'm enjoying more. The fact that we actually moved a back a bit to the freedom this country was founded upon, or the fact that leftists' heads are a'splodin'.

The ever changing battle lines

Remember, Heller was a call to battle, not a victory song.

This kind of thinking illustrates what we're going to be up against.

Because the case before the court arose from the District of Columbia and thus involved only federal law, the court did not resolve the important question of whether the Second Amendment's protections apply to limit state and local laws.

Benna Ruth Solomon, a lawyer for the city of Chicago, said there is, for now at least, no doubt about the proper answer to that question.

"As we sit here today," Solomon said, "this decision does not apply to the city of Chicago. It does not apply to the states or municipalities.

So, they feel they can ignore the ruling because it only applies to DC and not Chicago.

They're on thin ice, they know it, yet they're going to continue to skate around in circles until their hands are forced. If gun owners take a break, Heller will be for naught.

A lawsuit against Chicago.

Like I said, now is not the time to relax. We won a big battle, but the war is going to stretch on for a long time. I worry that the Heller verdict will lull gun owners into a false sense of safety when the anti's are already picking apart the ruling and focusing on 3 to 4 words to try to sneak in their bigotry.

Although there are plenty of battles ahead, I'm feeling pretty damn good about our chances if we stick together and keep it up.

Just a reminder - The Heller (Peace Be Upon Him) decision is not the call of victory, but a call to battle. The anti-forces will be doubling down now to find loopholes in phrases such as "dangerous or unusual" or "self defense in the home". They can not easily win in a full frontal attack, but be prepared for the whole 1,000 paper-cuts thing.

Now is not the time to relax. Enjoy your day, hit the range, buy some ammo or a new gun, but get ready for the upcoming battles. The will be small, but numerous.

And we'll be ready.

Don't resist. Just give them what they want, right?

What if what they want is your child?

The mother, who did not wish to be identified, said the man approached her 16-year-old daughter on Alhambra Circle near their home.

“She was walking her dog in the median right out in front of our house here, and a man approached her in a truck and tried to get her to come to the truck,” the woman said.

The teenager ran to nearby Coral Gables Elementary School, calling her mother and 911. The mother confronted the man and showed him her 9-mm gun.

“It’s not until I showed him that I was armed and that I meant business to protect my daughter that he backed off,” she said.

The mother shouldn't have escalated the situation like this. She should have complied with the man and let him take her daughter, calling the police to try to get on their busy schedule and have them try to find her after the fact.

That sounds stupid, doesn't it? But that's the outcome the Brady Campaign to Force Women to Allow Rapists to Take Their Daughters would much rather see happen.

She used a handgun to equalize her ability to project force. She used the threat of overwhelming violence to protect her offspring. If the Brady Campaign, VPC, or Barack Smoke Gets In Your Eyes Obama had their way and handguns were banned, what other chance would this woman have had?

No, it was the combination of a handgun and the will to protect one's family that prevented something worse from happening. Without the ability to use the best tool at hand (an easily carried force multiplier), this guy could have just plucked the girl off the street with the mother frantically trying to dial 911.

The mother said her gun made the difference in the situation.

“I’m licensed. I shoot almost every week,” she said.

The woman said she recommends a day at the shooting range for every parent.

And to think there are monsters out there that would take that tool away from her.

From various conversations and posts I've had / made over the past few days regarding gun control and background checks, I'd like to offer this observation.

Point Of Sale is the wrong time to prevent criminals from obtaining the tools they ply their trade with. If you wait until they try to purchase something before you figure out "Hey! They shouldn't have this! They might hurt someone with it", then you've waited too long to be effective. It's like trying to put your seatbelt on while slamming on the brakes.

You limit a criminal's access to dangerous items by incarcerating them, not by hoping a cash register somewhere properly identifies them and refuses to make the sale.

Ego Assassin asks

I think there is absolutely NO argument when it comes to fighting for “more guns” for citizens. There are PLENTY out there. Go ask the local gang bangers or the thugs that go around knocking over liquor stores. Go ask the idiots who shoot out their own schools with multiple weapons. Is this still not enough?

Can a gun-lover please explain to me where the shortage is? What is the problem here? Why do you need so many guns in so many flavors? Hunting? Shooting range? Is it that important?

I informed him that we're not looking for more guns (well, not for everyone else. I have no problem with getting more guns personally) but less government intrusion in the way of us being able to exercise our rights when it comes to them.

Head over and help him understand better. He's not into banning guns, believes we should be able to own them if we wish, so he appears to be open for understanding.
