The struggle to remain objective

So, my blog mama discusses the impending implosion of the far-right and how they're already turning into the far-left they so despise

Hey, right wingers? You have become the people you hate. You have become everything you screamed at people for being in 2004. You are running around claiming that Obama cheated, lied and bought his way to the White House. Looking around the blogosphere and its comments I see the words slimy, corrupt, devil, Antichrist, communist, evil, Stalin, Lenin, Hitler.

Now, unlike Michele, I didn't support and still do not support Barack Obama and his policies. I believe them to be detrimental to the United States and what it is that makes the US so strong. However, I also realize that it's not Barack Obama that is the US, it is you and me. And unfortunately more people seem to want nebulous change and handouts than there are who want to be left alone to live the American dream.

The problem is that the nastiest, most hateful portions of our society have come out of the woodwork. For the past few years, that has been primarily the left and their hate of all that is even remotely related to conservatives. The right side has their wastes of oxygen too, and now I see some who are ready to start deploying the same tactics that they derided for so long.

I can understand that reaction. It is human to want someone to suffer what you had to suffer in order for them to see the error of their ways. Alas, I don't think that being nasty to the other side will have that effect and will only entrench them further into their sewer pits.

When I was in the Marines, we were taught something along the lines of "kill with one hand, heal with the other". It was ingrained in us that we would fare better in war if we treated our enemies well. When captured, you fed them, kept them safe, and gave them shelter. They would be more willing to go along with you if they knew this was their fate.

The problem with the wings of any political movement is that at some point, you simply become a true believer. Listen and understand. Those wingnuts are out there. They can't be bargained with, they can't be reasoned with. They don't feel pity, or remorse, or fear, and they absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until your side is crushed. Fighting them with the same malice will have no effect. They will still continue to hate you and everything you stand for. Those are not the people you are trying to reach.

The vast majority of Americans do not fit neatly into left vs. right, conservative vs. liberal. It is those people you try to reach with reason and logic. To go off the deep end, hating everything Obama touches is going to have no effect and instead turn you into the very thing you hate.

I will fight every last thing I can coming from this administration that limits liberty. I would have fought against McCain, I've argued against Bush (although now I realize not hard enough), party be damned. Those of us who love liberty and respect private property will always be at a disadvantage as we are only given the opportunity to vote for different flavors of more government, never less. Let's not squander what little advantages we have by being reactively hateful.

Fight. Fight hard. Do not give up. Talk about liberty and freedom to your friends and family. Do not couch it in terms of left vs. right but freedom vs. slavery. Remind people that the more free people are, the more generous they become which has a benefit for the downtrodden that forced charity cannot compare to. Instill in your children the value of hard work. Volunteer your time to help someone in need. And as much as I hate to steal Obama's motto - be the change you seek.

God bless America, still the greatest country that has ever existed on this planet.

About my service to my country

RNS has another "Support the Troops, BUT.." article

I’m not going to quote the guy, since in his first paragraph he denotes just how out of touch the radical left is, and it is just plain embarrassing.

Put simply, his point is thus: They won’t admit to it, but because that book’s author and I believe it, anyone who says they joined to serve their country or for other patriotic reasons is a liar. They may not know they’re liars, but since neither the author or I can picture “Service” or “Patriotism” there must be another answer, and we believe it is simply because enlistees are poor and/or stupid.

To counterpoint the latest “Grim Milestone”, I would like to invite RNS visitors/readers/lurkers/etc., of either current or former military service, to write why they took the oath.

This is going to probably shock some people, but I'm going to be my normal self and be brutally honest.

I joined the Marines for several reasons, not just one, and all of it for selfish reasons.

I make no bones about being an unrepentant capitalist. I believe that every action of mine should result in a reaction that is beneficial in some way or another. When I was about to end my high school career, I had an epiphany. My rank in class was exactly the middle. I had a solid C average because that was all the effort I put into school.

The real world was beginning to show its face to me, and I realized I wasn't going to go anywhere with the attitude I had, and it was apparent that that attitude needed some adjustment.

I also had to pay for my own college. I had two siblings and came from a middle class family with not a lot to spare. However, I knew from my experience that even paying for college, I wasn't going to succeed because of my laziness.

Now, before some jackass goes "SEE!!! He HAD to join the military because he couldn't afford to become a student!!!!", let me toss a little water on that ember before it hurts someone.

My options were as follows

Join the workforce doing menial jobs to get through college which I'd probably had skipped out on or not put a lot of effort into.

Join the workforce in an attempt to find a career that wouldn't require college.

Join the military and get my ass in gear quicker, then go do the college thing, thus increasing my chance at success.

So, yes, I joined the military for purely selfish reasons - To help me get my act together so I could make something out of my life. I didn't join the military out of any sense of obligation to my country.

I joined the Marines because of a sense of obligation to my country.

I was accepted into every branch. Each recruiter wanted me in a bad way (I was a smart kid with high test scores). Not to dig at any of the other branches, but when I decided on the Marines, I had figured that if I was going to go through the military, I wanted to make it count in how I viewed my service. I could have joined any force, I chose the hardest.

I was told point blank that joining by the Marines, I stood a greater chance at being deployed. I knew the Marines had the hardest boot camp with the most training. I knew the discipline was intense, and I realized that by joining up, I may be required to sacrifice my own life for the defense of others.

However, I still did it for selfish reasons. Just like my rights are guaranteed only when yours are as well, by putting my own life on the line, I continued an honorable tradition of our volunteer military which in return protects my rights.

That's what these little pissants will never understand. They think their little rants online are somehow a 'natural' state of things. They think their right to freely speak out against anyone and everyone requires no effort. To them, it doesn't, but the TANSTAAFL principle applies - someone has to pay the price. They're too cowardly to do it and resent those of us who aren't.

Not everyone is military grade personnel. Lord knows I barely fit into the Marines with my strong streak of individualism. There's nothing wrong with not joining, and I've never held anyone in lower regard because of it. But talk trash about us, and the teeth and claws come out.

Freedom isn't free, and damn it at least be thankful to those who pick up the fucking check for you.

The woman initially refused emergency medical services but was finally convinced by responders and her boyfriend that she needed to be checked out at a hospital.

"We pried the toilet seat off with a pry bar and the seat went with her to the hospital," Whipple said. "The hospital removed it."

...

"She was not glued. She was not tied. She was just physically stuck by her body," Whipple said. "It is hard to imagine. ... I still have a hard time imagining it myself."

By a guy who grew up with him.

Seems interesting. According to the trailer, Moore actually owns Halliburton and Pfizer stock*. I guess it's ok for the health care system to screw over the little guys as long as fat ass can make a few bucks filming them as well as getting his dividends.

*At least according to this guy. I didn't verify it personally and the stocks might be part of some portfolio package. But if true, how sweet the irony is!

Hat tip Arms and the Law

David has a point

I wasn't going to comment on "Father" Mike Pfleger's plea to an unruly mob to kill another human being because other's have. I especially wasn't going to comment on the taxation laws that St. Sabina ("Father" Pfleger's church) seem to be breaking because I'm not a tax law person.

But David Codrea has a point - it doesn't take much to look into and see that St. Sabina is actively breaking the tax laws afforded to non-profit entities and churches. If a church wishes to combat gun violence, then they can talk to their parishioners until Moses comes back for seconds. But they cannot actively champion for legislative change.

"Father" Mike Pfleger of St. Sabina is a criminal and not a man of God. It is due to people like him that I have lost a lot of faith in the Christian religion. A man of the cloth does not call for the "snuffing out" of anyone and a truly religious man would not lie and say "snuff" means "expose". "Father" Mike Pfleger of St. Sabina is a liar, a criminal, and a charlatan and the church would do well to remove him from their ranks.

And the least I can do is help spread the word and hope the IRS starts checking out "Father" Mike Pfleger of St. Sabina's illegal activity.

If you have a blog, enjoy your constitutional rights, and would like to spread the word, please link to David's site and tell the world about "Father" Mike Pfleger of St. Sabina's tax evasion scam.

I work with one of the most leftist people you could imagine. Not only does he sport Impeach Bush! bumperstickers, but even had a vanity plate made for impeachment as well.

He walked by my cube today and on the Mac I had a nice picture of Earth as the background. The picture just happens to have North America in view, which he complained about with a very snide "That's a very North American Centric picture don't you think?" comment.

Everything to this man is politics. I don't think it would be stretch to say he probably believes the 1972 picture of the Earth was forced to show the USA by Karl Rove and Bush Co. The man actually has a map of the earth where other countries are "scaled" to show their "importance" rather than actual size or something.

And these people call themselves "reality based"?

Jeff, gently bashing a troll who extols the virtues of polls*

Appeals to the American people might pass as evidence in your world, but me, I remember that “Full House” ran for close to a decade, so I’m not really all that enamored with bandwagon appeals.

*I'm dead serious when I say I did not mean for that to rhyme.
