I'm a gun owner (handgun and rifles) and I think that its a problem that people sell guns without background checks at gun shows.

Is he wrong? Does this not happen?

He's lying that gun shows are a major source of terrorist arms. That there's any such thing as a "gun show loophole". There isn't. It's called private sales and that's what the anti's are against. I can sell you my property at my house in the exact same manner I can do it at a show. That's not a loophole no matter how many times you repeat it.

Besides, you're quite mistaken if you think selling an item without a check is a problem. If you're relying on a cash register to prevent a sale of an item to someone who isn't supposed to have, you've missed the problem and the appropriate point at which to solve it.

Yes, he is wrong. This does not happen with any degree that points to any problem with the system. .0001% is not a number you crack down upon.

These so called "private sales" are a big issue.

If a person can setup a table and sell a handgun to anyone who walks in the door at a gunshow, circumventing the gun laws intended to keep guns out of the hands of mentals and felons, then it is a loophole.

And a big one. Call it what you will, but its a problem.

As to terrorists getting guns, I have no idea if its a big source but you can't argue its not potential source. I'm not sure if the "we found documents in Pakistan pointing to gun shows for terrorist guns " stuff is true,but if it is (and I've to see proof either way) its a huge concern.

And selling a house and selling a gun are not the same thing.

It's not a loophole. A loophole is getting away with something on a technicality. There is nothing illegal about one person selling a firearm to another.

Tough shit. Get over it. There are 270,000,000 firearms in the hands of US citizens, you're not going to be able to track them with enough reliability to make a difference. Unless you want to make guns illegal, in which case I say good luck.

I can argue you are a potential child molester. Should you be disallowed from being around children without supervision then?

A loophole is defined as:

1. an ambiguity or inadequacy in the law or a set of rules

That is what the dictionary says it is. Which this gun show thing is. Everyone buying a gun thru a dealer needs to go thru some proceedures, while a gun show purchase can subvert this. Its a loophole.

Did I say I wanted guns illegal? No, I own some myself. I just think we need to do due dilligence in keeping them out of the hands of those that *shoudl not* have them. Felons, people will mental problems etc. Background checks help with that.

Did you have proof that the anecdotal evidence that terrorist training manuals point to gun shows as a way to get weapons is wrong?

I'm going to ignore the child molester silliness.
