Sharp as a Marble

If I was smiling any wider, I'd give the Cheshire Cat the creeps.

I had pulled out the .22 rifle to examine it. It's a cheap Armscor M1600 that I got many years ago.

Surprisingly accurate for an inexpensive rifle, and I got it in my head that I should paint it in some sort of girlie colors and give it to my daughters. The Hello Kitty thing has been done to death, so I'm thinking Care Bears or My Little Pony. Of course, I have a plethora of themes to choose from off of Noggin. Wow Wow Wubbzy could be kind of cool.

Anyway, I was working on pulling it apart when I heard my oldest daughter yell "Daddy! I found a gun!!! I'm leaving the room!" I almost broke my leg going to check it out. I was scared that I had inadvertently left the shotgun or my carry piece on the bed. Luckily for me, it was just the gun case for the .22, but she knew enough to not get near it. There is so much pride in me right now that I wanted to share with all of you because there's a very, very important lesson here.

Even if you hate guns and think they should be wiped off the face of the Earth, you should teach your children what to do if they find one. Even at only 5 years old my daughter knew not to touch what she thought was a gun. The very first thing she did was tell an adult. The next thing she did was leave the room. Would your child do the same?

Your children should know this. It should be repeated to them every time you think about it. If you're a gun owner, make sure you sit with your sons and / or daughters and let them see your firearms when you clean them. There is nothing wrong with obsessing over safety with them because as this example shows, it will take hold in their little minds.

I had been wondering how to test this scenario. I don't care if I removed the barrel out of my Glock, I simply could not leave any firearm just sitting around as a "test". I love my girls too much to risk something like that. Thank God this happened because I can't tell you what a relief it is to hear all my hard work pay off. Granted, Georgia is old enough and that's something to be proud of, Irelyn is still only 2 and it's no time to let down my guard. Safety, safety, safety!!!

Please, if you have young children, teach them that if they find a gun to not touch it, leave the room, and go tell an adult. If you have friends who have small children and aren't gun owners, stress to them how important it is - just like telling them to say no to drugs or to never get in a car with a stranger. It just might save their life some day.

A heartwarming story - and important advice to all parents.

- Thanks.

P.S. I'm still checking on the spare mag for the Armscor M1600 ... could be any day now.

That's the work of a damn good Father right there. Nice job, Robb. My son's going to be 6 in a month and I teach him the same things - likewise, no tests, but he sees the guns enough (and I'll show him any time he asks) that he doesn't obsess over what's in the safe. It's just the way it is, and the rules are the rules.

As for the theme. Noggin gives you some real good choices (my son's a total Noggin junkie, I'm a huge fan of the Upside Down Show, myself).

You know ... you could always go with Boowa and Kwala. If you've got kids from 2-6, B&K is the shizzle. Safe to watch, safe to let the kids play a little on the PC with real basic games, and big bright colors and simple movements get kids in a trance. Give them a try: http://www.uptoten.com/kids/boowakwala-home.html

How DARE you! Teaching your kids about gun safety?? Are you serious? Don't you know that teaching kids about gun safety is only a ploy to "condition" kids by turning them into little future neo-nazi's?

Great job. It's nice to know that there are some parents out there that actually, you know, parent.

ML: regarding that VPC nonsense... I'd LOVE to see some stats regarding children injured or killed by NDs who have been a part of the Eddie Eagle program. My guess is that the number approaches zero.

Robb: great job. I think I might "test" my children... but since I don't have any, I don't know what its like so my opinion on the matter is worthless.

Growing up, my dad always kept most of his guns in a difficult - but not impossible - place for us to get them. His M91 was always propped against the door by his room, so he could access it quickly... to show off to visitors and friends. Guns were never loaded inside the house. We knew we had to ask permission to touch it, which would always be granted. It was never "mystical" to us, because it was always just there. Frankly, growing up I was always more fascinated by the huge bayonet on it, and the mechanics of the action than I was with the fact that you could put ammunition in it and shoot things.

I was doing some work on my 10/22 the other night. It was getting late and I had to get to bed and work. I left it - totally disassembled - on the bench.

My kid goes in the room the next day, I get a call from my wife

"You son just found one of your rifles" . . . stony silence.

I'm scared. Did he find one I left loaded? Not in the safe??

"It was on your work bench. I don't think its function able - it looks like you took it apart. But he wanted me to know and asked that I call you."

The lessons paid off.

Robb Allen is Brimming With Pride: Even if you hate guns and think they should be wiped off the face of the Earth, you should teach your children what to do if they find one. Even at only 5 years...

That's excellent Robb! I don't have any kids yet, but when I do, I hope I can impress upon them the same consciousness of safety.

So did your daughter get an ice cream?

She got a dollar. That made her happy.

Funny thing. When the Mrs. and I went to the range on Sunday, she comes running in, knowing there would be firearms on the bed, and did the same thing.

I think she was expecting a dollar. That would explain the disappointment in her face when all I said was "Good job!"
