The gun bigots like to tell us that gun crime would lower if we made it near impossible for anyone to get firearms. It's not like you can just make a gun out of a pipe or anything, right?

Wrong

A 22-year-old KwaZulu-Natal man built a home-made firearm at the weekend and used the weapon to kill himself, police said on Monday

Police spokesperson Captain Khephu Ndlovu said the man had built the gun with a steel pipe at his Umlazi home on Saturday.

"The gun was seized and is now being kept at the police station," said Ndlovu.

The man then wrote a letter, locked his bedroom and apparently shot himself in the mouth.

The only reason guns are as expensive as they are today is because it costs a lot to make them reliable. Once the supply of reliable firearms dry up, criminals will simply make crude ones that endanger just as many lives while forcing the law abiding to suffer.

But that's the problem when you're so short sighted that you can only focus on the tool and not the criminal wielding it.

Just look at prisons where they make all sorts of weapons from everything that's supposedly harmless and taken away.

Mythbusters had a great episode where they made a crossbow out of something like newspapers and elastic waistband from prison-issue underwear. While it wouldn't put a hole in someone's head, he hit a great shot from about 15 feet away straight into a target dummy's throat.

Hell, you can make a cannon that'll put a potato-sized hole in someone's head from 50 yards out with a few bucks and a short trip to your local big box hardware store.

Any of these guys look like MIT graduates? Can you see any high-tech fabrication equipment?

But look, working guns! And many of them are in full-auto.

Also note the horrendus gun-handing and safty skills of the makers and shooters.

You make guns illigal, you just make them MORE dangerous.

My dad once told me he could make a zip gun out of a car's radio antenna.

hit youtube and search for home made gun. You'll see the spread from single shot breaktops made from air guns to homemade shotguns AND ammo.

A trip to harbor freight will get you the goodies to make some damn good stuff...some of which is on youtube. here's a good one

Home depot also proves to be a good source for parts of a flintlock.
