Sharp as a Marble

So I had to take my wife's car to get a carwash this afternoon. Knowing it took a while to do, I took along my copy of Florida Firearms Law, Use & Ownership to read.

image On the cover of the book is a big scary gun. It's so scary that when I stepped out of my vehicle to give the attendant my keys and my carwash preference, he jumped back and yelped.

Then he realized it was just a picture on a book, and yet still kept his distance, his eyes fixated on the cover.

He nervously asked me if I was studying for my permit. I informed him I already had it and was just brushing up on the laws regarding firearms.

Usually, when I go to this place, they constantly try to push you into a waxing or a detail job. This guy couldn't get rid of me fast enough (he didn't even ask me what type of air freshener I wanted).

When I went inside I paid, then sat down, holding the book up at an angle where I could both read it and see outside where my car would be.

The lady next to me looked like she saw a ghost. She got up and moved a few seats down.

This is what our society has gotten to, people. People are afraid of pictures of guns on books. I've never wanted to open carry so bad in my life, if only to (metaphorically) slap some people around and hope to knock some sense into them. It's pathetic to fear such things.

First you scare small children with flashbang .357 loads, now you are scaring poor carwash attendants with scary pictures. Next thing you'll be kicking puppies and taking candy from children. You are an evil man, Robb. Glad I could help ;)

Wouldn't want to scare the sheeple now... LOL IMHO the idiots deserve whatever they get. Scared of pictures on books?

It would be funny if these idiots weren't allowed to vote.

I think maybe I'll make up a couple of book covers with ERBs and pistols on them; that way it will keep people from bothering me while I'm reading.

Just keep doing it. If enough people are openly "out of the closet" eventually the sheeple will get desensitized. It won't be as much fun but it will be better for society as a whole.

Joe, it's part of the reason I want to push for Open Carry here in Florida. I don't expect hundreds of thousands of people walking around OC'ing, but the few times that I would it would have the same effect - desensitizing those who are afraid of them.

Are you sure they weren't just afraid of a book? Maybe they thought it contained magic spells and hoodoo.

Your right, OC would do a lot to help educate these cretins.

Amusingly enough, the one time I took "Boston's Gun Bible" through an airport, the TSA agent who saw it did not even bat an eye. Those three words in that order probably caused some manner of disconnect in his noggin, though.

And oddly enough, the People's Republik of Kalifornistan does allow open carry, though with massively stringent population limits for counties, cities, and towns... That said, while Florida has come a remarkable way in relation to firearm rights, I seriously doubt they would ever legalize widespread open carry... at least with concealed carry, those people who are afraid of an image can operate in an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality. However, once you start figuratively beating them over the head with the pistols... I would expect all manner of crankiness to result, and something tells me we would be outnumbered on this issue.

I don't think its the picture, because you could have the latest Military fiction book with Troopers and terrorists with guns on the cover, and no problem. I think they were scared that you likely ACTULLY HAD a gun, and yet didn't have a badge or a Military Rank.

Of course because its a law book, your chances of committing a crime are about the same of you hitting the Skunk Ape on your drive home, and finding that the smelly bastard had a winning powerball ticket in his hand.

Of course "Skinny the Crack Dealer" accross the street with a Jennings in his pants won't raise any eyes....
