It's okay to ban handguns as long as rifles and shotguns are permitted.

The D.C. Circuit, for good reason, called that argument "frivolous." "It could be similarly contended," wrote Senior Judge Laurence Silberman, "that all firearms may be banned so long as sabers were permitted." After all, D.C. does not ban home possession of knives or hatchets. Does that justify the city's handgun ban? Could publication of cookbooks be barred under the First Amendment as long as restaurant guides were allowed?

Emphasis mine.

The problem with the gun banners is that they act like only certain types of firearms are lethal, forgetting that it's the person using the gun that is the problem. A .22 short in the hands of a thug is infinitely more dangerous to you than a .44 Magnum in mine. A shotgun used for shooting pigeon will just as easily shoot a human being if used for that purpose.

That's why all this "no one needs gun of type X" is horse shit. Unless you want to ban them all ,from the .22 to the 577 tyrannosaur, shotguns and hunting rifles alike, you will always have a hard time banning any specific one (and remain logically consistent).

But I have a sneaky suspicion all is what the anti-rights people are after.

Personally, I think you have to draw the line somewhere. Is it reasonable for a private citizen to have anti-aircraft guns just for the heck of it? That being said, I think that line is far, far away from being crossed.

That depends. Does owning an AA gun force you to shoot down planes? Does the metal have magical powers that turn a normal person into a plane shooting maniac (especially since other devices are better suited to doing just that in a much more discrete fashion)?

And you can already own these types of weapons as it is (plenty of collectors with bottomless pockets have some fairly crazy firepower), and yet we don't see plane shootings that often. Unless CNN just doesn't cover those types of stories and I missed it.

Would the market all of a sudden flood with AA guns? I'd venture to say there isn't a market for them and anyone with that much money is going to find a way to down an aircraft anyway.

Besides, the Brady Bunch tells everyone all you need is a 50BMG to take out a 787 from 10 miles away.

Based on the video I saw, the best way to use the .577 tyrannosaur as a weapon is to allow someone whose shoulder you want to break an opportunity to test fire it.

Triticale, I laugh because I know of which video you speak.

This one.

Makes me want one. Because I'm stoopid.

Conversely, that reinforces my fondness for the .257 Roberts. Other than perhaps a blackpowder muzzle loader for extended deer season, my .308 is going to remain the household's big bore riifle.
