Sharp as a Marble

A buddy of mine and I were just discussing tasers. Tasers are one of two things I never want to experience. The other happens to be CS Gas.

The memories of gas mask training in Marine Corps boot camp still cause me nightmares to this day. I do not say this as an exaggeration, but had someone handed me a loaded pistol during that event, I would not be here today.

*shudder*

When we got gassed, I didn't find it that horrible. After the initial effects wore off, my sinuses were clear for days.

3P, when we went in the chamber, you couldn't see your wrists if you held out your arms.

I was one of the few people to whom CS gas isn't an eye irritant, but when I sucked it in (and we're talking full lung of it. Apparently it's impossible to sing the Marine Corps Hymn on a single breath) I almost crumbled.

It was like all the air in the world was sucked out and replaced with molten sulfur. Then there was the puking. And the snot. My God, how can such a small part of your body produce 6 gallons of mucus in such a short period of time?

But yeah, my lingering cold was gone after that.

tear gas training was milder in the conscripted Finnish army. we got to use gas masks, and had permission to leave the gas tent if the mask leaked --- so it was actually gas mask testing and training, not teargas training as such.

my mask held. afterwards i helped pack the tent back up, and got just a sliver of the residue in my face. i was very happy my mask had held.

I grok.. For me, it bothered my eyes more than it did my lungs. Once I hocked up that bucket-load of phlegm , it didn't bother me as much.

New! When Sudafed PE isn't strong enough - Sudafed CS decongestant spray - guaranteed to work!

Never had to experience CS gas, but I had my trial by chemical with OC spray... My job required first-hand experience of being sprayed, and while the first two blinks were ok, I do not think my eyes actually opened for about two hours afterwards (short of standing upside down in a bucket). Much less the inability to breath without sounding like a savannah lion with a six foot overbite...

"my sinuses were clear for days."

I felt the same way about that experience. That was the first day I had been able to breathe normally since I had gotten to boot camp. At the time, I wished they had hit us with that a lot earlier.

If you've ever been in the student section at Mountaineer field after a major victory, then you know that feeling first hand. The state po-po has on more than one occasion used gas to protect the goal posts (we love to tear them down after big wins for some reason.) I think it was two years ago that the entire marching band got gassed. You think breathing is hard when you've been gassed... try playing a tuba or piccolo!
