Sharp as a Marble

So, when I head up to the suburbs of Atlanta to take care of my mother after her surgery, I plan on taking my sidearm with me. Granted, I'll have to check it on the plane ride, but since there's reciprocity between Georgia and Florida, concealing it while I'm there shouldn't be a problem.

Unless of course, I want to go anywhere. Then, it seems, I have to be a f*cking mind reader and professional future-teller to know what is an isn't out of bounds.

Here are the laws in plain English (not suitable for legal interpretation). Looks like as long as I'm in my car or at home, I'm good. Anything outside of that is a crap shoot.

Holy crap, I'm glad I live in Florida where I don't have to try to guess where I can and cannot carry.

I've carried in GA a lot. Never a problem

I'm not too worried about it as I plan on concealing the whole time. I'd open carry and risk harassment 'cept I don't know the laws well enough to argue them on the spot and I'm going to be up there taking care of my sick mother and wouldn't be much use to her in jail.

But you can't carry on a bus (nor a bus stop!). You can't carry in a church. Parks are a crap shoot. No places where they serve alcohol, so that means pretty much any sit down restaurant (at least in Florida, I just can't sit at the bar. At a table within arms reach of it is fine). A large group of people could be construed as a 'gathering' but there's little way of telling.

It's just irksome that the laws are so convoluted. Why is my life worth less when I'm in certain places? What magical shield is cast upon me when I enter a bus that ensures I won't be attacked?

I forget living in Florida is actually not as bad as other places, even though I get irked about our laws here. But Georgia's laws look like a "compromise" where half of the state is off limits for no logical reason whatsoever!

If you think Florida's laws are straight-forward, guess again. It may seem that way, but you need to read Attorney Jon H Gutmacher's book "Florida Firearms: Law, Use and Ownership" if you haven't. A carry conceal license in Florida offer a lot of protection even if you aren't carrying concealed (i.e. in you glovebox or even trunk) but there are still lots of places in Florida that are off limits. Most of the law has never been tested in court (as Gutmacher will tell you over and over.)

A lot of the book deals with things that you and I are not concerned with, but it is still required reading, IMHYCO, for firearms owners in Florida.

P.S. - no he didn't pay me to pimp his book, but I did get a lot from reading it.
