Sound impossible? It's not. We can both stop the spread of AIDS (to a fairly controllable degree) and put an end to gun violence and the spread of firearms using the same logic.
First, let's talk about the guns. There are too many guns in the world, we are told. To put an end to the gun violence plaguing our communities, all we need to do is restrict their sales and have people turn in their firearms. Once the guns are off the streets, gun violence (and by extension, all violence) will lower to a much more controllable level.
Now, using this same logic, we can stop AIDS, and for that matter, all sexually transmitted diseases.
Everyone just stop fucking today. Simple. Elegant. No more fucking around = no more STD's. And no cheating either. Married people can get a license to fuck so we can do extensive background and medical checks to make sure they're clean and therefore keep the population going.
Within a single generation, STD's will drop to a level that they would be practically unheard of and therefor quite controllable.
Why will neither of these solutions actually work? Humans and their silly human nature. We are forced by our biology to do the horizontal mambo and deep inside our midbrains, we're still animals prone to violence. No amount of magic pixie dust legislation is going to change human nature.
This isn't to say we should outlaw legislation against violence. To keep our society intact, we absolutely need to diminish ability of violent predators to prey upon us. But it's fairy tale magic to assume taking away firearms from the law abiding will achieve that goal.
It's just like asking people to stop having sex. No matter what laws you put in place, people will break them. Sure, there will be a few law abiding people who stop, but the general population will turn into criminals instead. That's all that restrictive gun laws do too - turn otherwise law abiding citizens into criminals. And how would having more criminals lower crime (since now everything the previously legal person does in now a crime)?
