Sharp as a Marble

While we still don't know the extent of the problem, the one thing we do know is that my mother has Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC). Since I know very, very little about breast cancer (and cancer in general), I've been reading everything I can on the subject.

IDC is the most commonly diagnosed breast cancer, in the range of 70% to 80%.

You can remove the area where the cancer is (a lumpectomy) or remove the entire breast (mastectomy). I'm not sure where my mom stands on that yet, it's not a subject I'm broaching at this time, but generally the doctor will allow the patient to make that decision. A lymph node is also removed at this time to see if any cancer cells have spread.

Afterwards, there's radiation treatment, and depending on the patient's age, health, and stage of cancer, quite possibly chemotherapy.

The thought of my mother going through any of this is heartbreaking. The thought that she's 500 miles away, alone, is making me sick to my stomach.

I need to keep learning all I can, so I'm going to read as much as possible and cross reference everything so that I can get an idea of what's correct. Not all the information is good information, none of it points to an easy time for my mother, even in the best case scenario but that's part of life -Reading and learning things you might not like to know is true, but accepting them as reality and then learning how to deal with it.

Robb,

I'm sorry this is happening to your mom and to you and your family. I've been through similar situations with both my parents and other relatives. I wanted to encourage you to accept others' weak attempts at comfort (like this one). It's hard to say the right thing when it's not you going through the rough spots, but it's good when people care enough to say something.

Here's a verse that helped me: Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. II Corinthians 1:3-5

Mark, there's no such thing as a comfort too small.

It's very appreciated.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. Do they know what stage it's in yet?

Can I please, humbly, suggest that you don't read everything you can on the subject? Especially on the internet? You'll give yourself ulcers.

Most of the information is just too old, and will give you the worst possible scenario, even if you cross-reference it. I know this from personal experience. Could you speak directly to her doctor, instead?

Sebastian, no, we don't know the stage yet. They have to do an MRI this week to ensure it hasn't spread and they're still waiting on more biopsy results.

Tanya, you are right. I've already given myself a bad day's worth of panic attacks over this. But I can't help myself. I like to know as much as possible so that nothing comes as a shock to me. I need to be able to help my mother who, at this point is without a computer and I'm thinking that's a blessing in disguise.

When I call her tonight, I have to start nagging her for information. Doctor's name & numbers, friends contact info, etc. Then the dreaded "is your will ready" conversation.

And to top it off, I want her to move down here to Florida so she can be near us. If she gets sick, there's very little I can do from here to Atlanta.

See, now I'm working myself all up again!

Sorry to hear the news, Robb.

Just know that you, your mom, and your family will be in my thoughts for however long her battle with cancer is.
