Sharp as a Marble

One thing I've found myself doing more and more of lately is shooting Sasha offhand. When I go to the range, most people are sitting down at the bench, shooting as far as they can. Now, I can't tell you their reasons, and I'm not denigrating them for it, but I've come to the realization that shooting while sitting down is not good for me.

Sasha is not a hunting rifle. Sure, she could be used for it, but the main reason I bought her was as a SHTF weapon. We get hurricanes here in the sunshine state, and many times we can go without power for days on end. For some odd reason, when disaster strikes, some people think that means they can come and take stuff from your house.

Now, inside the house, a shotgun does wonders. And yes, I need to get one and it's on my list as soon as I scrounge up some cash (*cough*hitthetipjar*cough*). For the time being I think I can manage with my current arsenal, but over-penetration is definitely a problem.

However, if it looks like our neighborhood is experiencing problems, I want to be able to stop the goblins before I need to do close quarter combat. I pray I never have to do anything of the sort, but as someone who stocks up on supplies, the last thing I need is some idiot thinking that his poor planning gives him rights to what keeps me and my family alive. If my wife ever gives in and lets me get a whole home generator, I'm sure the lights being on will attract thieves like moths.

If, God forbid, it ever comes time to protect my family like this, I'm not going to be shooting much more than 50 yards anyway, and I doubt I'm going to have the luxury of sitting down in a chair and pulling up a table to shoot from. I need to be able to hit my target while standing, and possibly moving. And by practicing offhand, I won't rely on a bench to help me shoot. I can hit 50 yards, every time, without fail. Sure, it's a 10" grouping, but it's a hit and with a 7.62x54R, that's good enough to stop any threat. It even gets me better at operating the bolt, which on the M44 is notoriously sticky.

I'll still shoot sitting. It's comfortable and you get the fun of trying to shoot longer distances. But, I believe in the axiom that under stress you revert back to your training, so I'm going to train myself to stand and fight.

Although the thought of sitting in a lounge chair with my rifle is kind of funny.

I've found I can shoot about 5-8 inch groups offhand at 40-50 yards, no problem. That'll put a man down. I've found I have to aim pretty low, though, because the closest range on the adjustable sight is 100 yards.

I've never noticed a sticky bolt on an MN... but I can see how it would happen on a less-than perfectly matched bolt, or a dirty bolt/chamber.

Something you may wanna try sometime, for fast followup shots, is operating the bolt with your left hand, keeping the target in your sights. That's how Russian were initially trained to operate it. If you are using a sling, it doesn't work so well, but I've tried operating the rifle like that, standing/offhand, and was able to shoot on-target a little bit faster.

I keep a M-38 around for similar reasons. I gravitate towards it in spite of the fact I have more modern firearms at hand.
A handy bolt action carbine that packs a wallop rates high with me I guess.
The sticky bolt is no doubt due to some combination of lacquered & or steel cases, but I am sure you've read that, as every gun forum on the net that has any mosin discussion at all has at least one thread devoted to that phenomenon.

Offhand is probably the most valuable practice, learning to decrease the cone of wobble and hitting stuff. One good thing to practice is your follow-through, keeping your eye on the front-sight as it rises after each shot - don't look at the target until the gun is back in position. I'm not sure the bench is good for anything but sighting-in, really. Prone is much more realistic for distant ranges out past 100-yards. After seven years I finally managed to get my M1 Garand down to 8's and 9's and 10's at 200-yards off-hand. And the Eight-ring is like 10-inches across or something.

Dave, I'm pretty sure it's the lacquered cases that do it. It's not all the time - sometimes the bolt slides nice and smooth, other times you have to whack the handle a few times to get 'er to give it up.

When you go for a shotgun don't knowck the Maverick 88 models, they are basicall a Mossberg 500, and I know many people knock the Mossberg, but as a former gunsmith apprentice I "Tuned" several hundred Mossbergs and Mavericks, and when tuned they are very good reliable shooters. If you are interested you can drop me an e-mail, all the tune up requires is a set of needle files and 20 minutes.

Anita, my M44 is for the basic reason, other than a cheap shooting rifle to take to the range. I try to use four stances of shooting, standing, kneeling, sitting supported and the prone. The next days off I will also be trying out different country of origin ammo for Anita. I'll be trying out Albainian, Romainian, Czech, and Hungarian. I just want to see which shoots best, the most reliable, and the most accurate. I am laying bets on the Czech personally.

Let me know how your bolt likes those ammos. I have the Czech ammo which seems to cause the bolt to stick, but I can't vouch for accuracy as I've not put it in the lead sled and personally gaged it.

It's 100% accurate enough for me - I can hit what I'm aiming at at 50 yards (so long as "it" is at least 1.5'x1.5')
