Sharp as a Marble

You know, as I get older, occasionally I will listen to some of the music I listened to as a teenager and think to myself "WTF? How did I ever think this was good music?". I listened to a lot of Metal and Thrash, and today it's just noise.

But I seem to be on a Metallica kick. I mean the old school Metallica. Kill 'em all, Garage Days, Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning. And Justice for all was... ok. Then it just went commercial and started sucking. And I refused to buy Load.

No Remorse just got through blasting my eardrums. And it leaves me feeling a little happy. I find my fingers kind of remember the chords and rhythms and "air guitar" along. People walking by my cube probably think I'm weird. Scratch that, everyone in here knows I'm a few fries short of a Happy Meal.

Odd how one band still sounds just as good, but other stuff I listened to just sounds like utter crap.

Oh yeah. I remember my first jean jacket with a big Ride the Lightning patch on the back. I'll take Master of Puppets any time, and I liked some of the Black Album (what was that called ... Smell the Glove?). And Justice sucked.

For me, AC/DC was always at the top. My first choice for the jean-jacket back-patch was "For Those About To Rock". Mom didn't approve because skeletons firing cannons in a graveyard was too evil for her. Back in Black and Highway to Hell are necessities in a rock collection as far as I'm concerned. Like you, I've long since removed the likes of Anthrax, King Diamond, Dark Angel, and various other thrash-like noise from my collection.

And much to my wife's displeasure, I still listen to Mr. Bungle. Often. All of the albums. Excessively juvenile and I love every second of it. Now if I could only find some suitable lyrics to teach my 5-year-old...

We all have our secret music shame. I once thought the Steve Miller Band was pretty good.

But most of the stuff I bought as a teen/college student I bought again when CDs came out and I'm still listening to it: Pink Floyd, Yes, ELP, Led Zep, Genesis, SuperTramp, etc.. Maybe I never really matured enough to change musical taste.
