Fucking Verizon and their bait and switch schemes.

I waited years to get FiOS, their fiber optic network. Fiber carries a much higher bandwidth, and it was bound to make better TV and faster Internet.

When it finally came to my door, I was ecstatic. I ordered the entire enchilada immediately - phone, TV, and Interweb. Then, they screwed up my install date. Then they screwed up my phone. Then they lied to me.

You see, I run this blog off a server in my house. Port 80 isn't blocked by my current Internet provider, which also happens to provide me with cable. Let me be blunt - Brighthouse cable sucks. Their DVR sucks, the signal quality is overly compressed, their HD is horrendous, etc. However, I was able to upgrade to a faster Internet connection because I had the cable package.

So, when I found out that FiOS blocked port 80 on their residential plan, I called to see about their business plan. I was told, repeatedly, that the dynamic IP business plan would allow port 80 to be open. Repeatedly. I asked to ensure they meant both incoming and outgoing and they said yes. I asked "If I put a web server on my network, anyone on the Internet can connect to it, right?" and was told "Mr. Allen, absolutely".

They fucking lied. You cannot get port 80 unblocked unless you pay $100+ a month for a fixed IP business account. No matter how many sales people, tech support personnel, and installers promise you.

Now, Verizon already has installed all their gear which means they dug up my yard and drilled holes through my outside wall. We've already switched over our phone numbers and have the cable box in use. So now, I'm in a dilemma of biblical proportions.

I told Verizon to shove the Internet line where the sun doesn't shine. I can still use Brighthouse for connectivity. But the problem is that I have to cancel the cable from Brighthouse which means they will cut down my bandwidth (the speed I have is only available with the cable + Internet package). Then, the cost of said line, even though it is smaller and slower, goes up because it too is part of the package.

So, I could just tell Verizon to get all of its shit out of my house and just stick with Brighthouse for everything. The problem is that Brighthouse sucks. Verizon's TV is superior to what crap Brighthouse sends down. And we've already changed our phone number with our friends and would have to try to switch back to Vonage.

The other issue is that FIOS Internet is blazingly fast compared to Brighthouse. I mean, night and day.

So, I can stick by my principles and stick with a shitty product (Brighthouse) or swallow my pride and get a much better product albeit without a particular function I absolutely need. ANd I have to do this knowing that the company I'd be getting it from intentionally lies to their customers to try to bait and switch them into more expensive products.

And to pay for offsite hosting... well, I might as well pay for the static IP. I can't stand the thought of not running the server the way I see fit and since I tinker with this blog code from time to time, I need immediate access to it.

So, the best case scenario has me losing my blog, the worst case makes it so slow and unresponsive I'd probably wish it was down. Port redirects aren't a solution (trust me, I tried and there are actual things that prevent me from doing it) and I'm not having funky port numbers at the end of my URL (which, incidentally is the same reason I can't use redirect very well).

Gack--running your own server is such a hassle. I would just not worry about it completely. Which isn't to say you shouldn't cancel Verizon. I have never trusted any landline phone company farther than I can throw 'em, and I'm not too fond of cell phones either.

Nah, the server is a breeze. It's the firewalls and networking that can cause sleep loss. Besides, I run my own mail server (which I could still do using Verizon. Idiots) which has been a godsend when it comes to reducing spam. Besides, I honestly do a lot of test work on it and it's good to have around. Even if I lose this blog, I'll still run a server.

DynDNS might be able to help you out; they have a bunch of redirection services.

This is to inform you that everytime I have to address this problem it is tearing me apart piece by piece. It has been 1 year to date that I pleaded for your help and I have not received it.

My 38 year old Son died on November 27th 2006 Believing that my husband & I abandoned him because everytime he tried to call collect a recording stated” At the CUSTOMERS request they do not accept COLLECT CALLS.”

December 21,2005 a Bright House Representative ,Attila 1-866-718-7907 ext5230 called my home and told me that I would get the SAME SERVICE at a lower price if I changed from Verizon to Bright house.
I accepted.

On March 16,2006 I called Bright House to inform them that I could not receive Collect Calls from my son who was trying to reach me since February. They said that Bright House does not have the option of collect calls.

THAT IS NOT THE SAME SERVICE.

I explained to Bright House that COLLECT CALLS are the most IMPORTANT calls in my household due to the fact my son was a recovering addict .

I would never have changed service from Verizon had the Representative told me the truth.

I have had phone service since 1968 & have always been able to accept collect calls so when you say SAME SERVICE that is what I expect.

April 20th 2006 I called Bright House again letting them know I still cannot receive collect calls and my son is still trying to reach us.

May 10 2006 I filed a complaint with the FCC #11793891.

July 19th 2006 Bright House Mr. Williams & Mark Galler Communications Supervisors called me in reference to the FCC complaint. I told them the only solution to this problem was:

When selling the service INFORM THE PEOPLE THAT THE PLAN DOES NOT INCLUDE COLLECT CALLS

REMOVE the recording that states”AT THE CUSTOMERS REQUEST” and replace it with Bright house does not accept collect calls.

A letter to all Bright House customers informing them the plan does not include Collect Calls.

OMIT ‘NO RESTRICTIONS’ from all advertising articles.

August 4 2006 I filed another complaint to the FCC# 12077779.

October 5 2006 I filed a complaint with www.naruc.org

October 7th 2006 I received an email from my son that he still cannot call collect.

November 27th 2006 Matthew,my son, died

March 16 2007 1 year to date due to FRAUDULENT sales & advertising tactics I still cannot receive Collect Calls.
I took all the right steps, I explained the problem, I gave solutions and I waited for help from you, mean while my son was waiting for help from me.

Can you even begin to understand how horrendous I feel?

I will never be able to help, hold, or SPEAK to him ever again.

The last year of my son’s life was not good. I know he felt horrible every time he called us & got the recording “AT THE CUSTOMERS REQUEST’.

Bright house communications RESTRICTED our communication rights by not giving me the SAME SERVICE that ATTILA & BRIGHT HOUSE told me I would get.

Now before this happens to someone else, will somebody anybody help me.
