Looking through my trackbacks, I find a link to me from Pellis over at The Biologian who comments on this post
once said, "Oppressors can tyrannize only when they achieve a standing army, an enslaved press, and a disarmed populace. Thanks to Robb Allen over at Sharp as a Marble for writing this post about how America's government is shaping up to become just such an oppressor.
I'd like to note that it's not the government itself that is shaping things, it's our citizenry who continues to place more and more power into the hands of politicians and bureaucracies.
So many people want something for nothing and vote using their heartstrings instead of their logic. Yes, it's good to donate to charity, but no it's not a good idea to force people to do so. Yes, we should not overeat or indulge in too much food with transfat, but again, it's not a good idea to allow the government to make that choice.
Every time a liberal grants the government more power to "take some from a few for the good of all", they grant that same power to the right wingers who will eventually take office. Every time the Christian right grants the government powers to force porn shops out of business, they give the Socialist / Progressive movement the same power to close churches and religious functions when they get in power.
The fault lies at my feet as well as yours. In our system, we only have ourselves to blame. Hell, I'm so wrapped up in trying to fight the most recent anti-gun idiocy and the amnesty immigration reform, that I can't seem to focus enough to be effective on anything.
So, if you want to see why the government is as fucked up as it is, look no further than the nearest mirror and the people standing next to you.
