I meant to link to this video a few days ago, but like everything else in my life I forgot about it.
Oleg Volk takes Jennifer out for her first time ever shooting
Now, this video makes me sad in a way. Actually two. One, I don't own enough guns. Two, the guns that I do have are not suitable for introducing someone to firearms.
Jennifer here starts off on a .22 pistol. I have a .22 rifle, and that's a nice start, but I have nothing in a handgun caliber that is isn't guaranteed to introduce flinching early.
The .357 Magnum is simply a hulking beast of a gun. It requires large hands and considerable strength to pull back the hammer or use the trigger in Double Action. The report is loud although the 6" barrel reduces perceived recoil quite a bit. It's heavy and could easily fatigue a non-shooter since it requires a bit of wrist strength to hold up. I can load up with .38 specials to lower the noise and recoil, but that doesn't negate the difficulty some people have with the size. My wife was unable to operate it safely and I feel it's not really a good introductory pistol.
Size and weight wise, the Glock 29 10mm is very manageable, but it too is loud and the kick from it can be quite unwieldy. Granted, I could make some "cat sneeze" rounds myself, but I don't like the thought of underpowered rounds and new shooters. The increased chance of a blocked barrel isn't something I want a new shooter to have to worry about.
And Sasha? Only if you never want that person to ever shoot anything else for as long as they live. Bad choice for a first time shooting.
I need a .22lr pistol as well as a decent 9mm. The .22 is a fantastic introduction to shooting. No recoil, cat fart level noise, light weight, and you can shoot it all day without fatigue. The 9mm is an excellent "first high power cartridge" as it too has minimal recoil but definitely feels more like what a pistol should.
I'd also not mind a .38 special revolver. I wouldn't want a snub nose like my mother has, but a smaller framed .38 is a great revolver and I'd like to teach people to shoot using both semiautomatics and revolvers.
However, even I must admit that I don't think I have enough evidence here to get the Mrs. to start letting my buy tons 'o pistols.
