I was just reminded of something that happened the other day by this post by David.
I was talking to a rather left (ok, ridiculously left) leaning guy about a lawsuit that was on the news the other night. The basic story is that a woman goes in for lipo, goes home, catches an infection in the stitching area, infection causes her to lose her hands and legs. Now, she's suing the doctor who did the surgery.
Honestly, I don't know all the details. That's how I remember the story - that the lady caught and infection at HOME and thinks the doctor is responsible. Regardless, this is what I was discussing with this guy.
His view? The doctor should pay the 5.5 million dollars because someone owes that woman money and the insurance companies have the cash. His reasoning - because he always roots for the 'little guy'.
I was incredulous. He kept asking me how much I'd take to cut off my hands and used that figure (priceless, in my words) to indicate that the woman was owed the money. While I know it seems heartless, I cannot accept that we as humans should require other's property in compensation for bad things that happen to us.
Yes, it's sad the lady lost her limbs. However, if the doctor did nothing out of the ordinary, that's just part of the risks you take when you elect to have surgery. There's a reason it's called practicing medicine.
How scary is it when people honestly believe they have a right to your money simply because bad things happen to them?
*sigh*
