Sharp as a Marble

Went shooting on Saturday with a buddy of mine. I've manged to stop milking the grip and shooting too low, but I cannot for the life of me seem to stop shooting to the left. My friend shot a magazine and all his ended up leftward as well.

Great. Out of all the Glocks in the world I get a liberal one.

Bad jokes aside, I'm thinking my sights might be slightly off. I'll have a gunsmith check them or try to use the rest next time to see if I can pinpoint the problem.

However, I did shoot a lot offhand (left handed for me) as that is my weakest shooting style, and I was amazed at how well I did. My left hand shakes for some reason, and I'm not usually well coordinated, but I was lethally accurate at 10 yards with most of the shots hitting the black (and all of them at least hitting the target!).

The funny thing? They all were on the right side.

Can't double tap worth a shit with the 10, at least not rapidly. It takes a good second and a half before I'm back on COM accurately. If I try to go too fast, I'd hit the target in the heart the place the next round in the balls. I'm not sure that's too bad of a thing, though.

My buddy has a nice .22 pistol and while a .22 would only tickle a goblin, I could put enough of them in a 1" grouping in short order to probably do enough damage to take them down.

I think I'll stick with the 10 for self defense though.

Dry fire practice--trust me, it's not your sights. It's all about trigger control. Nice smooth press and let the gun go boom...but you can't build good habits without practicing dry fire first. Anticipation causes right hand shooters to push shots left and left handed shooter to push right.

As you are pulling the trigger- you are seeing a good sight picture, then your mind says "NOW!" and you jerk the trigger, predictably sending the round to the left when shooting right handed. The most common shooting error.

Front sight focus, good trigger control and good follow through (a.k.a. second sight picture) is what it's all about.

Good training video suggestions:
JIM GROVER DEFENSIVE SHOOTING SERIES- available through Palladin Press. In my opinion, the best most comprehensive instructional shooting video series by J. Kelly McCann

COMBAT PISTOL- by John Shaw of MidSouth shooting school in Mississippi. A good supplement to the above series for some advanced drills.

Get the above videos and DRY FIRE PRACTICE and you'll exponentially increase your effectiveness at the range.

Gee, you're having trouble shooting a 10mm Glock quickly and accurately? SHOCKING!

Borrow or rent a G19 for a while and compare/contrast. I'd bet $5 you've developed a flinch.

In exchange for following my advice, I will grant you the secret of shooting Glocks fast: trigger reset! Next time you're dry-firing, press the trigger to drop the striker. KEEP THE TRIGGER HELD BACK! Rack the slide to recock the striker. Slowly let the trigger up. Feel that? That 'doink'? That's the disconnector resetting. Next time you shoot, follow through completely and hold the trigger down. While you're getting back on target, let the trigger up JUST enough to reset and press again. If your finger leaves the trigger face while shooting, you're doing it wrong. This is also a great way to quickly shoot something like a Beretta or USP that has a lot of trigger slack.

I dry fired a bit at the range. Flinching is very seldom, but it is there so I'm dry firing more and more to ensure I get closer to 0%.

One of the range officers complimented me on my shooting. I looked at him like he was crazy and, well, said as much. His response? "Dude, you're shooting a compact frame 10mm and are hitting the black. That's not bad."

I have to remind myself that with the 10, my entire goal is to hit my target COM. Not head shots, not shooting the gun out of their hands, I want to put a round in the middle of their chest. The 10 does a good job of damaging things when it hits, pinpoint accuracy isn't critical.

I will of course constantly strive to achieve such accuracy, but as long as I can hit a 10" target from 10-15 yards, I should be good enough for self protection.
