The fact that he didn't immediately receive several dozen extra holes in his body might explain why I no longer go to this 'range'

From TBO

TAMPA - A 10-hour hostage situation at a shooting range came to an end about 3 a.m. when Jeffrey Lane Dudney, 42, killed himself. Dale Mabry Highway, which was closed during the tense standoff, is open for the morning commute.

...

Gee said that there were three customers and two employees taken hostage.

Two others in the store were able to flee before being taken hostage, the sheriff said.

There were four men and one woman taken hostage, Gee said.

The woman was a manager and owner of the business, Gee said.

During the standoff, television stations were asked by the sheriff’s office not to give details of the situation.

The reason, said Gee, was the volatile nature of the unfolding events.

“Every two or three minutes he was threatening to shoot people, one by one Gee said. “He was very agitated, very amped up.”

Dudney, said Gee, “came to door several times with a gun to the head of some of hostages.

“Every time we would talk to him, he would bring hostages to door. Some he would throw to the floor, others he used as a shield.”

I wasn't there so I really shouldn't judge, but for God's sake this was a gun range. With guns. And ammo. And several people who should be able to put a 1" grouping in the man's skull while ringing up an hour on lane 5. I used to go there and in order to leave (or walk up front to talk to police), you have to turn your back on the counter. There's nothing immoral about shooting someone in the back. Especially if he threw the hostage to the ground, you'd have a clear shot.

Again, I wasn't there. I know one guy who works there is like 700 years old. I ordered some ammo one time, handed him my card, went to the bathroom and came back and he still hadn't made it back to the register (not a joke). So, I doubt he'd be much use in this situation. But for the love of Smith & Wesson, everyone else in there should have been able to do something.

Adding to the difficulty was the fact that the shooting range was “basically a fortress,” Gee said.

“Doors were welded shut,” he said. “From a tactical viewpoint, it was a most difficult situation.”

The windows were tinted, Gee said, meaning Dudney “could see out and we could not see in.”

I always thought the design was poor. You walk into a small room, turn right, then enter the store. It's hard to see inside that room (which might account for why the other hostages weren't able to help ventilate the goblin). They have two sets of doors, but the inner doors were always propped open (which seemed odd to me as well).

Luckily, nobody except the gunman was hurt. Maybe they could recognize that he was suicidal and probably wasn't really going to hurt them, but I don't think I could just sit there for 10 hours, surrounded with the very tools I need to protect myself, and not do anything.

This is why you should carry 24x7. No place is 'safe' and carrying isn't an inconvenience to your life (you have to balance things out. When you go to the beach, you probably can't CCW your Glock in a Speedo but that doesn't mean you should never go to the beach!).

THIS is what should piss you off...his prior record.
Oh, and you need not comment about the mis-reporting of the caliber of handgun he used...it is noted. Guns don't kill people, letting scumbags like this go, kill people.

The judge on this case is an idiot. A buffoon.
Getting let out on bail while being charged for 1st degree murder.
* Alert * Something is wrong with the system *Alert* or at least this judge's ability to judge.

TAMPA - A minor collision on a South Tampa street turned into a case of attempted murder when one of the drivers pulled a gun.

Tampa police say Jeffrey Lane Dudney, 42, bumped into a Chevy truck with his Dodge Dakota at S Dale Mabry Highway and W Bay to Bay Boulevard Saturday, and drove away without stopping.

The Chevy driver chased after him, and the two drivers pulled over on Ysabella Avenue.

Then, police say, a simple fender bender turned into something a lot more serious.

The driver got out of the truck to talk to Dudney and found himself staring down the barrel of a .38 caliber pistol, according to police.

A woman got out, too, and they say Dudney pointed the gun at her.

They drove away in the Chevy, but not before a shot shattered the rear window and cut the driver and woman with shards of glass, police say.

The victims got Dudney's tag number, which police used to track him down.

They arrested him Thursday on three counts of attempted first-degree murder. He is being held without bail at the Orient Road Jail.

TAMPA - On Thursday, nearly a week after a traffic fender bender led to gunplay, police found the suspect and his handgun.

On March 31, Jeffrey Lane Dudney, 42, was driving a Dodge Dakota pickup and struck a Chevrolet pickup at South Dale Mabry Highway and Bay to Bay Boulevard, police said.

Dudney drove away without stopping, according to an arrest report.

The other driver followed Dudney, and they pulled over on Ysabella Avenue.

The Chevrolet driver got out to talk to Dudney, who pulled out a .40-caliber handgun and pointed it at him, police said.

The driver got back in the Chevrolet, and as he drove away, Dudney fired a shot into the rear window, police said.

The driver and one of his two passengers were cut by glass.

During the incident they noted Dudney’s tag number, which police used to identify and track him.

Dudney faces three counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count of driving under the influence.

He was being held at Orient Road Jail late Friday.

Bail was set at $150,500.

TAMPA, Fla. — A gunman barricaded himself in an indoor shooting range, taking hostages during a 10-hour siege that ended when he shot himself to death early Friday, authorities said. None of the hostages was hurt.

Jeffrey Lane Dudney, 43, of Tampa, was facing attempted murder charges when he went to the shooting range Thursday afternoon intending to steal a firearm and flee the area, Hillsborough County Sheriff David Gee said.

When someone confronted him, Dudney took five people hostage, including a woman who owned the Shooting Sports Inc. gun store and range, Gee said.

Hours of tense negotiations ensued with Dudney, who said he didn't want to go to prison and repeatedly threatened to kill the hostages.

"Every two or three minutes, he was threatening to start shooting people one by one," Gee said. "He was very agitated, very amped up."

The gunman was often seen during the standoff holding a pistol to the head of hostages, Gee said. During negotiations with officers, he released two hostages. Because of the number of guns and amount of ammunition inside, police chose to negotiate rather than storm the building, authorities said.

Then at about 3 a.m., Dudney killed himself with a gunshot to the upper body, authorities said.

"He told us earlier he was contemplating suicide," Gee said.

Dudney had been released from the Hillsborough County jail Saturday on a $150,500 bond on three counts of attempted murder, according to jail records. He was accused of firing a gun at witnesses who followed him after he was involved in a crash earlier in the day, Gee said.

Up to 200 officers were on the scene, and busy Dale Mabry Highway was closed near the shooting range at the height of the rush hour.

During the standoff, police asked media outlets to refrain from reporting any information about the situation for fear of further upsetting the gunman. The Associated Press and some others accommodated the request. Others reported it on Web sites.

Having a gun and plinking paper targets or wind-up Smurfs or even deer does not prepare you for a real-life situation. Had someone in that store started firing, there's a good chance the death toll would have been much higher.

Given the situation, it's quite possible that someone with the proper training and experience might have still needed to hold fire and surrender their weapon. If they held their fire, either they knew to, or they were not qualified to start firing anyway.

I've been in two shootouts in my life, and because of my job at the time, unarmed. It's not like TV or the movies, and it's not like hunting or the gun range.

There's also a chance that the death toll would have been higher had the gunman decided to start shooting the hostages. Luck had it that only he was killed. When a deranged man threatens to kill you, you take it seriously and fight for your life if possible. Again, not being there I can't say what the heck happened.

I disagree because that was the range I used to shoot at and there's no way a single person could hold the store hostage without allowing someone access to a gun. Again, not being there I can't say - Dudney could have backed them into the office or one of the ranges, who knows?

That's something else I don't get. The ranges are protected by bullet proof glass. When Dudney went up front, I'd have ran back there and jammed the door shut (after taking a few boxes of ammo with me).

I talked with some employees at the range I shoot at (which I just got back from a few minutes ago) and they agreed that that should have never happened.

And for the record, I've unfortunately have had to use my gun in self defense. I know two things for sure. One, it's not like the range because the targets don't shoot back and two - when you train at the range often, you will fall back onto that training when the SHTF. My quick draw and reflexes saved my life that day and luckily no shots were fired. But because I train (and now I shoot every week) I was able to aim COM under stress and was totally prepared to shoot if needed.

I pray to God I never have to do that, or worse, again.
