I have always said that civilized people are not incapable of violence but rather choose reasoning when possible. A civilized person will recognize when civility and reason no longer work and use force, overwhelming at that, to ensure his or her safety is paramount.

Actually, I think Gandhi was an idiot. The man actually suggested that the Jews should allow themselves to be slaughtered by the Germans.

No, he wasn't civilized, he was domesticated. People who think like him are easily wiped out by those who would use even a modicum of force. It is why I believe that those who believe in freedom should always be willing to fight for it. Peace is an illusion and should never be considered absolute.

The reason people like Gandhi and Martin Luther King (who I do admire, by the way) is because they were working against rational, civilized people. Had either of them tried their shtick in Iran or Communist Russia, they would have ended up being killed in a heartbeat.

The man's recorded views about the Holocaust are something else, that's for sure. At least he went right out and said it so you knew where he was coming from. A lot of peaceniks won't say it out loud, not if it's about Hitler.
