People in the United Kingdom are looking to government for help in reducing the incidences of muggings. The government created this situation in the first place by banning gun ownership. The government was nowhere to be found when it came to keeping 24,000 children safe last year. The government appears to be nowhere when it comes to catching criminals. There seems to be a direct correlation between the lack of gun ownership and the lack of personal responsibility.
This is what a lot of anti gun people get confused about. Owning a firearm requires that you maintain a sense of personal responsibility, very much like driving a car. When you get behind the wheel of the car, you are responsible if you hit another object or harm another person. Even if your axle breaks, it's still your fault. While hundreds of thousands of people are irresponsible with their vehicles each year, we don't punish the responsible drivers by denying them a car. Gun ownership works the same way.
Our society is slowly but surely deluding itself into believing that nothing is our fault and that we can blame our environment, and even inanimate objects for our shortcomings. Fat? It's the burger's fault I ate 20 of them this week. Child rapist & murderer? It's because others made fun of my floppy ears when I was a kid. Killed someone with a gun. The gun made me do it.
You have a free will (and if you don't believe that then there is no reason to discuss it since the discussion isn't part of the free will and is self defeating!) and you make the decisions in your life. Sometimes you make bad decisions and it's your responsibility to deal with them. When you start putting that responsibility on others, then don't be surprised when you no longer have a say so in how your life is run.
The Brits are starting to find that out.
