Sharp as a Marble

As I write this, I'm opening boxes of Post-It Notes in the main store in southeastern Wyoming with Freddie Svenson, Dayshift Manager for 3M, Grant Vennison, who is senior research engineer for 3M, and several other stock boys. We're testing Freddie's keys to his 1978 Pacer on several boxes of the new, hot-pink Post-It Notes.

I must be living in a vacuum. Grant tells me that the use of 'box cutters' have a rapidly growing following among stockmen, especially office supply workers. I had no clue. Only once in my life have I ever seen anyone using one of these dangerous utensils.

I call them "assault" utensils, which may upset some people. Excuse me, maybe I'm a traditionalist, but I see no place for these weapons among our restocking fraternity. I'll go so far as to call them "terrorist" utilities as they were used in bringing down airplanes on 9-11. They tell me that some companies are producing "safety" blades.

Sorry, folks, in my humble opinion, these things have no place in opening boxes. We don't need to be lumped into the group of people who terrorize the world with them, which is an obvious concern. I've always been comfortable with the statement that stock clerks don't use assault box cutters. We've always been proud of our "just sharp enough keys."

This really has me concerned. As stock replenishers, we don't need the image of walking around the store carrying one of these weapons. To most of the public, an box cutter is a terrifying thing. Let's divorce ourselves from them. I say other departments should ban them from the warehouse and showfloor.

That was very funny! You are a genius.

Zumbo has a right to his opinion, but should keep it to his self.

20 years ago while hunting prairie dogs in Montana, a fella drove by my truck in his station wagon shooting out the window with an AR15 doing "Drive-bys" on them. He was having a ball. I've hunted prairie dogs with all kinds of guns. Last year i used an AK-47. So hunting with these weapons are fun. Good times with them. I carry an assault rifle with me in the woods. Sorry ZUM, you are wrong on this one. Why should we shooters and hunters care about what the lefties think. Remember ZUM, they want all our guns including those fancy rigs you got. Zum, you make me sad.

Well done. Zumbo's ill-considered attack on those who enjoy semi-automatic, detachable magazine fed rifles--and his only slightly better "apology" are a real disappointment. Finding some humor in the situation makes it considerably easier to take.

Kurt, I've said this elsewhere, but the damage has yet to be completely understood. The Brady-Bunch is already running with this ball and doing a victory dance in the end zone (of course, they don't realize they're playing baseball).

The absolute blitzkrieg that has happened with the blog being deleted, Remington dropping support, disavowals from his publisher, and the intense firestorm from bloggers I wouldn't have thought could tell the difference between .223 and 50 cal tells me the reaches of this are going to echo for a long time.

I wrote this to (a) poke fun at an asinine statement and (b) show how easy it is to classify anything as a terrorist weapon when it doesn't suit your needs. The problem is a lot of people are going to take what Zumbo said as gospel and his words will be used against us.

In some ways, it will make our lives harder. But I think there's a lot of good that is going to come of this. Maybe. If you're a Tolkien fan, I think that Americans are a lot like Ents - we take a long time to work up any sort of anger or enthusiasm. We're just as likely to drop it. But if this storm is any indication, there might be a larger portion of the populace who has started waking up to what's going on.

Let's at least hope so.

I have followed Zumbo carrier for many years and there is not one of you that deserves to lick this mans boots. He is allowed to have his opinion if you and I agree with it or not. How many of you are the idiots that hunt Northern Wisconsin fire 50 to 70 shots between 6 guys and never get the deer let alone see my 13 year old son laying on the ground because he thought you were going to shoot him? You people better think about what you are doing because the majority of us do not use those guns and never will but if you keep proving your stupidity we can help take them away!

My opinion? He's an idiot. You're not too far behind.

You people better think about what you are doing because the majority of us do not use those guns and never will but if you keep proving your stupidity we can help take them away!

Molon Labe, asshole. I'd like to see you come and take a single one of my firearms. The day they make them illegal is the day that me and millions of Americans simply become criminals. I refuse to surrender them regardless of what label you chickenshit bedwetters put on them. You're hunting rifles are next on the politician's list as they are much better suited to sniper rifles than a measly .223.

But, if you get your jollies off thinking you're going to take away peoples firearms, best of luck and I suggest you get plenty of Kevlar while you're knocking on doors.

Ok, let me clear something up for you BOYS.I own 114 diffrent guns and 10 of them are assault rifles including AK47 and AR15 that I have collected over the last 20 years. The problem here is not the gun nor the 30 round clip, it is the idiot using it shooting wildly at anything that moves. So rather than talk big man crap you had better open your eyes and help change the view of these weapons that we all like to have fun with rather than trying to hang anyone that disagrees with you. It is so many guys like you that have not got a clue about how you will lose the rights to your guns because you dare someone to come and take them. HAHA If the Antis get their way you will beg to give them up because they are going to make it so costley to own them that you will not pay for registrations and Taxes and Saftey courses that are mandated out of your pocket. These things will cost thousands by design and if you do not pay and do not shoot only when and where they tell you you will go to jail. That my friend is when you will turn your gun in on your own. So stop talking like some kind of inbreed White Klan member and try to educate yourself and your friends about being responsible and finding out what is really going on.

John,

First off, people are a lot more likely to listen when you don't come off as a condescending, arrogant, Fudd jagoff. Secondly, how many hunters are irresponsible without a semi-automatic rifle? How many fire wildly at anything that moves, maybe even with a shotgun that should be plugged? How many hunt without permission, poach and hunt while drunk?

Thanks for the excellent blog, Mr. Allen!

John,

You can "help take them away!", but who will be there when they come to take away your "hunting" rifle? Once they take away the "evil" rifles, they will come for them all. We need to unite and stand together, for we, as gun owners, need each other to keep our rights alive.

John, do you think the 'rights to our guns' are something bestowed upon a bunch of ingrates by a generous state, with which we ought always to curry favor? Or maybe it involves that Bill Of Rights thingy I read about somewhere?

Shhhhh...Do you hear that? That low, rumbling sound...? It's ol' Jack O'Connor, rolling over in his grave.. (actually he was cremated, and his ashes are resting in sheep country...) But you get my point.
Methinks you doth protest too much, and deep inside, just like with Barry Goldwater, "You know he's (Zumbo's) right.." What?" You never heard of Barry? Well, that solidifies my opinion that the majority of you are 30-something, and really lack the traditional respect for the great sport of hunting, and confuse it with shooting. The two are separate activities, albeit many fellows enjoy both. Both discharge firearms, but in different venues. Some or both may indeed have what my Dad called, "Hunting manners", today referred to as "ethics". BUT, for this old swamp rat, there is something intrinsically "unethical" about being afield with a 30-shot clip, "automatic", military, people-killer rifle. But then, I feel the same way about those yahoos who "hunt" while astride a screaming snowmobile or ATV. Unethical, and inadequate.
The traditional sport of Hunting may well be going the way of music...We once had the Big Band sound...Now, we have Rap. We used to have hunters, now we have the shooters...Time wounds all heels...

What?" You never heard of Barry?

Oh, I dunno. I just might.

BUT, for this old swamp rat, there is something intrinsically "unethical" about being afield with a 30-shot clip, "automatic", military, people-killer rifle.

So intrinsically unethical you can't name a single reason why. It just IS. Tell you what Sparky. You come up with actually, immoral reasons and I'll definitely give it a listen.

Pardon me if I don't hunt. I can get my beef, turkey and chicken from Publix. But, unlike you, I don't get my beer from the store, I make it myself. Also, unlike you, I don't hold it against people who do things different than I do (and I sure as hell don't label store bought beer drinkers 'unethical').

But the whole gist of your comment is totally, 120% off from what we're saying here. I don't give a rat's ass what you hunt with. The few times I went hunting I toted along a 30.06 and personally wouldn't be comfortable with a .223. The big point is I DON'T CARE.

But, if given a choice between pissing all over your 'tradition' or your rights, your tradition is getting a nice, warm, golden shower.

Too bad I can't expect the same from the Fuddites.
