Sharp as a Marble

3 days.

To make sure I have enough time to cool off, in case I'm mad or something.

Then, I get to pick up this

My new Glock 29 10mm Auto. I originally was wanting a Sig 229 (with both .40 and .357 Sig barrels) but Sigs, as nice as they are, are pricey.

I decided on the 29 because I am so used to shooting .357 magnums that I've simply grown accustomed to massive rounds. Full load 10's can snap your wrist off if you're small of frame, but at 6'3" and ...ummm 200+ pounds...or so..., that's not something I'm worried about.

I tried the Glock 23 (.40 S&W) but it just wasn't as comfortable in my hands as the 29 as the 23 is slightly thinner. I like the .40 S&W round and the 10mm can be loaded to be practically identical anyway, but I'll probably stick with 180gr. loads since that seems to be the best of both worlds (both fast and large).

Now, to assuage my readers with a more touchy constitution, I am absolutely planning on never, ever, ever having to use this thing outside of the range. If a thug pulls a gun on me and asks for my wallet, he gets it. Nothing in there worth either of our lives.

But if push comes to shove, I've got 676 foot pounds of force at @1300 feet per second to defend myself with.

Um... not to pick too many nits, but...

Foot pounds are a measurement of force, as in how many feet a pound would be displaced. Foot pounds already factor in velocity.

A better statement would be

676 Ft/Lbs of force for 180 grams @ 1300 fps.

No problem. It was a typo (notice the at @). I'll correct it after I've reloaded.

Oh, and to nit pick your picked nits, a 180 gram round would be hucking fuge. Like almost half a pound!

Me? I'll stick with 180 grain, thank you.

I'm with you on the wallet.

I guess that's the reason I decided a long time ago that if I ever felt it was necessary to carry a personal weapon I would only do so if I could learn to proficiently use and afford to buy the Desert Eagle Mark XIX .50 AE.

Because, seriously, if you pull that sumbitch out, and you still have to fire it, the sumbitch you're firing it needs that hard of a hit to know to go down.

Me? Sight of a .22 would be enough to get me on the ground. Because, to paraphrase Ron White, I don't know how many shots it'd take to drop me, but I can guess how many they're gonna use...

Well, I do have one concern about over penetration. 10mm rounds are quite powerful - they can go through a car door and still have enough force to be lethal. So, if I ever am in the situation where I might have to pull, I have to consider what's behind my attacker as I might hit it as well.

A .50 would do about the same.

Get your concealed carry permit, and the need for that three-day waiting period goes away.

Good call on the Sig. My Sig P232 shoots straighter than any handgun I've ever fired, but despite multiple trips to the gunsmith it tends to jam unexpectedly. Really not worth the extra $$, and not a gun you want to stake your life on in a tight spot.

BTW: On the .50, I know it'll go through just about everything.

I like to think of Danny Vermin in Johnny Dangerously;
"This goes through armor. And through the victim, through the wall, through a tree outside..."
