So, last night I finally started my quixotic task to catch up with Battlestar Galactica. I had ordered Season 1 Disc 1 from Netflix, but the bastards shipped me Disc 2. The problem is that, out of the box set, Disc 1 is actually the miniseries that started the whole shebang and Disc 2 is actually the beginning of the actual "season".

So, it's a wee bit confusing. But I finally got things settled out and watched all 3 hours of the miniseries last night so I'm ready to start watching the real Disc 2. Eventually, I'll get season 2.0 and probably season 3 by the time I'm caught up (hopefully, by then I will be taping season four and can catch up).

I have to admit, I was stunned at the revelations at the end of the series (*spoiler -ish warning*). The fact that Adama blatantly lied about Earth seems to put a damper on things from my perspective. I'm assuming that they will 'find some evidence' that Earth might actually exist because knowing their trek is futile seems odd to me.

The second thing is you know who the Cylon spy is. I figured you could have milked an entire season out of that plot line as it is. The only thing I'm not sure of is if the spy knows what she is. But since she's one of the 12, that doesn't stand to much reason, but I might be wrong.

One minor note - If the Cylons are indistinguishable from humans physically, then how come 6's spine could glow when she's hot and horny? Seems like that would be a good test. Get everyone aroused and watch their back ;)

Anyway, thoroughly enjoyed the show. Loved the 'low tech' angle and how it's rather easily explained. And the new Cylon robots look kick ass.

Can't wait to start watching the series!

I'm disappointed in season 3 (or is it 2?) that's currently on the Sci Fi Channel. I won't give anything away, but I'll just say that the previous season ended with an AWESOME cliff hanger. They moved the storyline in a whole new direction. That new storyline could have been played out for a lot longer than it was (last Friday's episode pretty much wrapped that up).

It's still one of the best shows on TV. Enjoy!

Season 1 was great, season 2 was good and season 3 wasn't all that much, in my opinion, UNTIL the most recent episode. By the way, do you realize that by blogging your catch-up effort, you're practically begging for spoilers in the comments? No matter, I'll avoid them anyway. As for Adama "blatantly lying", well, get over it :>) He asks the people to believe in themselves, in each other, and, (by way of subtext), to believe in what a bad@ss character he is and they do. Don't worry, it pays off and the journey isn't futile.

Oh, and about the Cylon hot back thing. I don't think anyone but us, the viewers, see that. So that's why it's not a test.

Mike - being that I remember quite a bit about the original series, I know Earth does exist, so I'm sure it washes out in the end.

As for the sex / vertebrae thing - I'm still thinking I should test 6 and Boomer. You know - take one for the team.

As to weather the lying was right for the series? The answer is easy: There IS no one character or action that is 'right for the series', although the closet items are Rosalyn and Apollo, but even they screw up.

All of the major actions in the series seem to be compromises... in this case, Adama has his own reasons to follow the president's lead, and the act is probably supposed to underscore that he's prepared to tell
white... err... gray lies when the needs of the fleet demand it. His honesty and his duty conflict, and this time duty wins out.

P.S. Yes we know earth exists, but what we DON'T know is what shape it's in. It could be modern-era earth like in the previous series (in which case Galactica is a danger to them, not a benefit), or they could find a Earth just beginning to expand into space, or they could find a glowing pile of rubble much like the one they fled.

A plot twist I'd include is having the SETI program lure BOTH the Galactica and the Cylons to Earth. Sci-Fi writers have long warned that SETI is a great way to get the human race smothered in its cradle...
