Sharp as a Marble

So, I hurt my neck last week. Then, this weekend I hurt my back. The Mrs. finally broke my will and I went to the doctor yesterday. Turns out, I really did injure something pretty good and it didn’t take the Nurse Practitioner 30 seconds to figure that out. What my problem was was that no medicine was helping ease the pain. So she prescribed me a muscle relaxer and 600mg Motrin horse pills.

Now, my Dr’s office is high tech. There are no more folders of charts – instead the whole office uses laptops and tablet PCs. The nurse wrote up my prescription, asked who I used for a pharmacy, and with the click of a pen submitted the request to my local Walgreens! No paper. No waiting. Nothing!

Of course when I showed up an hour later Walgreens had no record of any such transaction at that store nor any others in the area which was only resolved after calling the after hours physician two times and wasn’t able to pick it up until 9:30 PM, but hey! The technology was cool!

By the way. Muscle relaxers? Woke up at 7:45 this morning with both my legs hanging off the bed from the 5:45 attempt to get up.

Odd. My Walgreens transfers work flawlessly. (I have the same setup at my clinic.)

What did you actually injure? If you say "my back," I'll fly down and hit you in the head.

For the neck - C7. The nurse could feel the muscle around it go into spasms any time I tried to turn my head. Apparently I overcompensated and ended up pulling my trapezius too. I can deal with the back pain but the neck issue made driving hard (couldn't turn to safely change lanes.)

"The modern of miracle medicine."

Was that on purpose? Just an afterthought...

I pop 600mg Ibuprofens like they're M&M's and frankly all they do is take the edge off. Even COX-II inhibitors barely dent this thing. What was the muscle relaxant? That's what I need. When you sit in front of a computer as long as I do, with a torn rotater cuff, incipient scoliosis, isthmic spondylolysthesis and carpal tunnel in both arms, you need relaxation. Booze has too low a therapeutic index to be safe here. Plus I have to be able to get up the next day. My delts, rhomboids, lats, erector spinae and levator scapulae are all tense as granite. I have audible crepitus in my right shoulder (my mouse arm) on manipulation. Basically I'm screwed. Let this be a lesson to you folks: don't play rugby. Ever.

Wow, David. All of a sudden I feel much better. At least in comparison.

Yeah, the computer thing will kill you eventually. My wrists are shot. My fingers go numb all the time (like even right now).

Anyway, I was prescribed Cyclobenzaprine. Doesn't make me feel woozy a bit, but when I sleep it seems to make me sleep very deep.

Ah yes Flexiril, Marvelous medicine. I was prescribed the same thing for neck pain a few years ago. It is amazing how deeply I sleep when I occasionally take it at night. In fact, I find half a tablet of the 10MG dose does the same as a taking the full dose.

The best part is it is it appears to be non-addictive. Ihave used it for the past 4+ years and only when I feel the need. The downside for me: if I take it during the day, I feel like I'm moving in slow motion. Not sleepy, just slow-footed. I don't recommend it if you drive long distances or in traffic.

Second best thing: it doesn't cost you an arm and leg, even without insurance.

Good luck to you!

Hum, cyclobenzaprine. I've done some Googling, and it looks like scary stuff. I'm not on MAO inhibitors due to my lack of major psychotic disorders, but I likes me the booze (like Robb, I'm a beer hound). Sounds like this is the sort of thing I should take Saturday evening to allow a recovery period on Sunday.

The rotater cuff injury is the most serious: it really affects my quality of life. It's amazing how many things need a strong shoulder to happen right, from loading a shopping cart to sex. Trouble is, it probably needs surgery, and that's $25,000, with a 60% success rate.
