I’ve got a meeting today, lovingly scheduled during lunch, that I absolutely do not wish to go to. You see, they don't usually let me go to meetings because I have this awful habit of saying what I think instead of simply nodding my head. I have no problem telling a VP that his idea won’t work and then lay out un detail the reasons why.
Did you know VP’s don’t like to hear things like that?
Anyway, our network admins purchased an Identity Management product. In short, this software takes multiple domains and applications and synchronizes everything so that users only have to remember a single user name and password and have a single place they can go to to manage everything associated with their account.
At work, we have domains for both our employees as well as external customers. Now, you would think that a software package designed for Identity Management could handle more than one group of users, right? Not according to the admins. They say it can only handle one domain and that the application development group needs to write some software that allows half of our users to manage their accounts in one way while automatically managing the other half. Which is complete and utter bullshit.
What really is the case is that the network admins have no idea how to use what they bought. And since they are now under a lot of pressure to use this expensive piece of shelfware, they are coming to our group claiming it is our issue to write something to pull their asses out of the fire.
I’ve already talked with my director and my manager, both who will be at the meeting. I’ve explained to them that I will be sitting there biting my tongue the whole time. I’m tired of dealing with idiots, tired of the corporate culture, tired of ‘vice presidents’ who wouldn’t know the difference between reference or value types yet still want to tell me how to write my programs, and tired of the 45 minute drive to work. What I’m not tired of is my paycheck, which allows my wife to stay home with my kids and will afford us the ability to send them to private school when they get older. So I keep telling myself I’m doing this for my girls and it helps.
I really wish I could make decent money doing photography, but unless I want to milk people for $5000 sitting sessions, that just isn’t going to happen (and yes there are idiots who pay that kind of money around here).
Thanks for listening.
