Not to be outdone by Nikon, who recently announced a nearly complete exit of the film-based camera business, Konica Minolta has just announced that they're pulling out of the camera biz altogether.

Man, film seems to be doomed faster than I thought. There will always be a specialty for it, but I bet it goes the way of audio tapes before we know it.

While you're right that film camera's are history, the upscale 35mm models with interchangable lenses (Nikon, Canon, etc) are making their new replacement digital version using the same mounting platforms.

Meaning, your lenses and flash's can be used on the new digital replacement.

So go sell your camera body, keep your accessories!

Well, as a pro when someone says SLR camera, I automatically 'disconnect the lenses' in my mind. To me, they are two seperate things.

This is why I have a Nikon D2H. I already had a Nikon N80 with lenses, so switching to Canon made no financial sense. And all my lenses switch between the two with no problem.

Don't throw them out just yet, wait until they stop making the film.
Nothing looks better than a slow chrome film. Scan the slide and you have the best of both.

Harrison, I agree that currently there are things you can do with film that digital hasn't caught up to, but those are becoming very specialized areas.

As I run a business, shooting digital provides me with a competitive edge that film simply cannot compete with. I can shoot, correct, and have 8x10s printed within hours. And without having to worry about the cost of film, I can shoot a bajillion pictures and be sure I caught exactly what I wanted.

Film will always remain, just like there are people who paint or (*ahem*) those of us who make their own beer. The art form will endure. But for the business shooter and the home user, film simply does not make the same amount of sense it did just 5 years ago.

I won't argue about the quality or the speed, but I love my darkroom equipment. Processing film and printing your own pictures is exactly like making beer. Except, well, faster.

I agree completely with the business argument for digital.
Both my wife and I try to shoot for money. She, weddings and funerals; me, architectural (and sports if they let me); together, a wedding or two. There is no better feeling than knowing you "got the shot" when you leave a shoot. That's the main attraction of pixels. The other is the "darkroom". Being able to correct the perspective on a building in the computer is frighteningly easy. If I'm getting paid, It's digital. The chrome thing is what I do for myself.
I also work in the retail end of photography. Another reason not to sell your film cameras is nobody going to give you much for them. The market for used silver-based equipment is in the toilet. If you've ever thought about getting into medium format, now's a good time to buy. Dirt cheap, relatively speaking.

Dang. The best pictures of my glassware on my website are 35mm. A Canon AE-1 Program I bought in Japan in 1984. I got a Program so I wouldn't have to read the instructions. All these years later, I still haven't.

I'd hate to lose that.

I'm keeping my N90S as a backup body should my D70 crash unexpectedly. I also use it for B&W shooting.

That's the beauty of the Nikon mount; all my lenses fit both my camera bodies, with complete functionality.
