Finished the last book of the Dark Tower series by Stephen King last night. 7 books written over the course of 33 years. Luckily for me, I didn’t start the series until a few months ago so I wasn’t one of those miserable people who had to wait decades for the story to come to its fruition.

But alas, my friends are gone. Gone are Roland of Gilead, Susannah, Eddie, and Jake of New York, Oy of Mid-World. No longer will they keep me company at night, telling me their tales as I pass the time. And this is oddly depressing. When you read a book of that magnitude, the characters become so real to you that their ends, be it their deaths or the completion of the story, leave you feeling slightly hollow as if you’d truly lost a friend.

I loved the books. Granted, there comes a point where the deux ex machina becomes a bit wearisome, but then again no fantasy novel could exist without it. King is the type of writer who can keep your attention even through the boring parts (i.e. book 6 “Song of Susannah”). Most of the books were 2 or 3 days of reading which is about average for me because his writing style prevents me from wanting to put them down (unlike say Heinlein who while I find fascinating, I have a habit of stopping towards the end and not finishing for months.

For those of you unfamiliar with the series, it is a story about Roland Deschain of Gilead, the last of the Gunslingers on his quest to find the Dark Tower. Roland’s world is similar to ours, yet very, very different. It’s the way the worlds intertwine that make the story so interesting with each character helping the reader along in discovering what the Dark Tower really is.

If you’re a fan of Kings writings I highly recommend this series.

Hile Roland of Gilead, Gunslinger. We were well met. Long days and pleasant nights.

Absolutely loved the series, right up to the part where Stephen King writes himself into the storyline. I could grit my teeth and bear with it, until the final kick-in-the-balls of having a complete non-ending ending to the story.
As I sit here I cannot remember a single book or series that left me so pissed after getting to the end, putting the book down, trying to digest the ending and put the series into perspective.

That being said Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series may end up being the second classically great series that just could not quite pull off the potential shown in the beginning books of the story.

Not to drone on and on, Terry Goodkind's The Sword of Truth is another great series that is also just beginning to drift into trouble.

I think any story that goes on too long risks drifting into trouble. I didn't care for Sing of Susannah because of the King part, but the story itself remained intact.

Many looooong stories are long because the author tries to describe everything in too much detail. Seriously, if it weren't for the scenery descriptions, LOTR would have been a novella.

They really get into the reader and vice versa, somewhere after book 3 "Thankee sai" entered into my vernacular. It did take me a while to get used to King as a character in his own book, but eventually it grew on me and I was ok with it. In addition to the books, one of the short story collections(I can't remember which one) has a Dark Tower story in it.

I'm one of the long suffering fans who began reading the tale many years ago. I waited for each novel to come out, and then ran out excitedly to buy it the first day. I've read them all, except for the last two or so, about three times each. (It's kind of a must if you have been following the series for 30 years) I loved the books. I always figured that Susan Delgado would show up sometime later in the books. I'm sad she never did. I was as in love with Susan as Roland was. I can really relate to the feeling of having travelled a long journey with a group of friends. I was sad when it was over. I felt the same way after reading the long version of The Stand.
