Sharp as a Marble

Look, I’m no engineer or nucular fizzisist by any stretch of the imagination. However, I have always had a soft spot for science and love to get into the nitty gritty of whatever I can. Truth be told, though, I don’t always understand the math since it’s not something I study on a daily basis. So often, when I read a science report, I simply have to take on faith that the equations work and that the people producing the numbers know what they are doing. Science is a wonderful, fantastic thing humans have concocted over the years, but since there is no way I can learn every detail of every statement, quite often I just have to….. forgive me…. simply believe.

For example, my new tires I just purchased were filled with Nitrogen. No charge, but normally $4 a tire if you just go in to get them filled. I did some light research, culled out any sites that sold N2 as hype-induced advertisement, and the general rule of thumb was that N2 was a larger molecule it wouldn’t leak out as fast therefore extending the life of my tires for many, many miles. Also no water vapor would prevent rotting of the tires from the inside. What a great deal!!!

Looks like I was wrong.

N2 is larger, but lighter and therefore could actually leak out faster. And ummm, water vapor is a gas, not a liquid so pressure changes due to temperature is not something the typical driver has to worry about. Third, and the fact that I totally failed to think about this embarrasses me – air is 70% N2 anyway.

Sigh. I wish I could peer into the mysteries of the universe and understand it all, but alas, I have a job where that kind of research just isn’t pertinent to my work. I’m not stupid. In fact, I’m rather bright: Don’t let my grammatically error prone ramblings fool you. I didn’t get the job of Aviation Electrician working on multimillion dollar fighter aircraft for the Marines being dense (well….. at least not when it came to numbers). But to see I’ve been ‘had’ is depressing, especially when consider that most people won’t do more research than the brouchure they’re given and that the ‘having’ will go on.

At least I can make beer…..

Yeah, Keith, but think of all the fun we wouldn't have had if you'd never made the call. Then again, I wouldn't have put too much thought into the fact that Rob blows things up for fun and pretty much admits to guesstimating his calculations. I'm not sure Florida is far enough away from the Midwest...

I started out in rocket science and it always makes me smile when people say "It's not exactly rocket science..."

In my experience, rocket science is knowing a little chemistry, a little bit about ballistics and Newton's laws. Oh and some plumbing.

I got N2 in my tires free from Costco when I got new tires. They will refill if needed, and you can put regular air in them in a pinch. I have not had to refill them. Not really sure if all the perks are true, but my thought was free is free, and it works...

It's dry, so that will help a bit.

NEVER fill your tires with oxygen. Someone was griping about a basketball being deflated and came up with the brilliant idea of filling the b-ball with oxygen from the ambulance.

Fortunately, the ball started getting hot, so the medic put the ball down before the bright pressurized flame errupted from the inflation port.

I'm sort of glad I got to see it, but it's one of those things I never hope to see again. Although, you know what? A video would be nice....

I call shenanigans. Considering that oxygen doesn't burn, the basketball story sounds like bunk. (Oxygen is a catalyst, not a fuel.)

Keith:

I'm a biochemist and rocket science is a hobby for me. Basketballs are made of rubber, which is the fuel used in many hybrid rocket motors (paper and asphalt (without the rocks) are other common fuels in hybrids). Furthermore, basketballs tend to have oils in them, both from manufacture and from being pumped up with air pumps that spray oil into them.

Oxygen is not a catalyst. A catalyst is a chemical that, when the reaction is over, is not changed chemically. The classic example is ash. If you try to light table sugar, it won't burn. If you throw a little bit of ash on it, you will have the sugar burn, even though the ash does not enter into a reaction.

Oxygen is an oxidizer. It does not burn, but it supports combustion. The oil in the basketball started burning first, and then the interior of the basketball burned. Fortunately, the amount of oxygen was far smaller than the mass of rubber. That's why we use liquid oxidizer in the hybrids, and have the liquid vaporize and burn the rubber or paper.

This, by the way, is why you never put oil on the fittings of an oxygen tank and why you wipe lipstick off patients when you put them on high flow O2. I've seen a patient get burns on the lips from high flow O2.

The embarassing part is that I didn't put everything together until the b-ball started getting hot. I was focusing too much on playing basketball to think of the consequences of our stupid move.

I wonder if I could get Mythbusters to do this one on their program. It really was impressive, although not nearly as impressive as the usual stuff Mythbusters blows up.

I own a t-shirt that says "Actually, I am a rocket scientist!"

Rocket science isn't what it used to be. For most of the really nasty math, I use computer programs or just put the launch pad far enough away in case something goes wrong....

I retract my Shenanigans, and bow to the Rocket Scientist.
