Sharp as a Marble

Allow me to bitch for a moment, if you don't mind. Here's my day in a nutshell -

The wife's been feeling odd lately. At various points in the day, she would be overcome with dizziness and nausea (no, she's not pregnant - she's breastfeeding, I'm neutered, and the pregnancy test was negative. Hey, you can't be too careful!). This has been happening for the past 3 weeks, but really has been happening more and more, primarily in the morning.

This morning she woke up as I was leaving for work and I told her to try to get some more sleep as that usually took care of it. I drive 45 minutes to work, pour myself a cup o' joe, and start my work. At 8, she calls, too sick to get out of bed. I'm not hardly at work for an hour and I have to battle traffic to get back home.

My wife has never been to the regular doctor since I've known her. So, the earliest appointment I could make was December 2nd. By then, this will probably have passed, but I go ahead and make the appointment so she can be on his patient list and be seen sooner the next time something like this happens.

She goes to lay down and gives me the girls. So, I try to telecommute which is very, very difficult with a 3 year old who wants to play and a 4 month old who is in a 'hold me' only stage.

Finally, I get Irelyn down for a nap and Georgia interested in Play-Doh for a while. My laptop decides that it's simply not going to load my projects from work. After 45 minutes of fighting it, I finally get everthing up and running. Of course, this is the time Irelyn decides to wake up.

Oh, and during this time, I'm getting emails from our company's help desk regarding problems that have nothing to do with my group. I get pretty steamed up about that kind of stuff. Having to fight Visual Studio at the same time put me in a foul mood.

So now I'm trying to code with a baby in my arms. Not going well so I quit. The wife wakes up and decides to go ahead and go to a walk in clinic. I won't let her drive herself, she won't let the girls go in the waiting room. So I have to pack everyone up and drop off my wife. I felt like such a schmutz letting her sit there sick and alone, but there wasn't much more I could do.

I feed Georgia and myself, and at least get to toss a few darts to burn some time (I'm a nervous wreck). She's there for several hours since they were busy and they're machine they used for blood work was down. Irelyn's getting grumpy because she's jonesing for some boobage and that's the one department Daddy can't help in. I get her to sleep (finally) and 10 minutes later Kari needs me to pick her up. So I have to try to get Irelyn in her car seat without waking her up. I failed.....

The doctor informed my wife that she is sick. Probably a virus that would go away in 2 or 3 days. My wife even said 'What about the previous 3 weeks?' He just prescribed her anti-nausea medicine instead. Stupid doctors.

So, grumpy baby, grumpy wife. We get home and I notice my Jeep Wrangler listing to the right. Back tire picked up a bolt and was toast. My spare is 3 sizes smaller than my tires (I can't fit a spare tire of the same size on the back due to the CHMSL) plus, I cannot leave anyway since the wife is too sick to do much of anything. So I call AAA for a tow. You know, one would think all the $ I pay for membership that when I get 'free towing' it wouldn't come with a zillion questions attached.

So the Jeep makes it to the shop. They, of course, do not have my size tires in stock. Won't until tomorrow. Also, noticed my other rear tire was reaching the 'shot' stage. Gotta get two of them. Wouldn't be to bad if the cheapest tire I could get wasn't $150.

So, Georgia's in bed, Kari's in bed, Irelyn's in her crib screaming her fool head off.

I need a beer....

There's a children's book by Chris Van Allsburg called Two Bad Ants, and it has the line: "When the queen ant is happy, the whole hive is a happy place." Truer words were never spoken.

Makes you understand why some people think the flu is a top-secret weapon the gubmint is testing on us - IT'S EVIL!!!

Hope the medicine's kicking in...

I hope today is a better day and that your wife gets well soon.

I'd offer more platitudes such as 'days like these are sent to test us' but basically they don't help.

Bah, my problems are superficial. There's a lot of others out there with real problems, mine are just annoyances. I just had to get it off my chest because I had no one to talk to and was getting irritated at myself.

Totally right attitude.

Now go brew some more beer and stop whining, you pansy :-)

Problems, annoyances, whatever they are ... hope things have improved and you have a good Thanksgiving.

I know how hard it is to take care of a baby and a toddler. I've done that a few times before and at the end of the day, my patience has gone poof. It's a really hard job.
