Sharp as a Marble

My primary home PC has decided that it doesn't like it's hard drives any more. I'll be happily working away when I'll hear a loud *klunk* emanate from the case and the screen will lock up. Many times on rebooting, the system freaks out and tells me it could not read from the boot partition.

I'm totally bummed. The last thing I can afford right now is another PC, being that this one is less than 8 months old as it is. And I don't know if it's the motherboard, the serial ATA drive, a bad cable, dust, drivers, etc. It's been too long since I was in the hardware gig. Besides, the Mrs. is slated to get a new laptop this Christmas and we'll give her current PC to the girls.

The other thing that sucks is that I just don't have the time to break the system down and determine what's wrong. I've got so much work to do, even when I'm at home, that PC repair just isn't on the top of my things to do. Which is ironic because most of my work requires my computer....

Since I'm no longer up to date on the hardware specs, it would be hit or miss if I were to replace one part at a time. I really hate to have to reformat my PC especially since it's right where I want it now with all my programs installed. I'm sure Adobe thinks I'm some sort of pirate for installing Photoshop CS2 a zillion times already, but I'm constantly rebuilding my PC it seems or switching OS's. Maybe I'll try to reinstall XP-64 again this week and see if the release version's drivers work better.

So, if you see a dearth of posting, well, that's normal for me anyway..... Next time I'm just sucking it up and buying a prebuilt system. Dude, I'm getting a Dell!

Get that hard drive replaced PRONTO. Do not screw around with loud *KLUNK* noises.

If you wait, you will regret it.

Keith, I have a very, very strong gut feeling it's a combination of the mobo and drivers. I can cause it to do it if I try to load XP64, why it happens randomly with 32, I don't know yet.

The drive is practically brand new. However, I keep all my important data on other drives, but it's time to do some DVD backups just to be safe.

My Dell laptop's hard drive recently crashed out of nowhere. It made a horrendous scratching sound and then went kaput. The funny thing is though, my brother's Dell laptop's hard drive crashed a few months later. So you may be taking a risk with Dell.

You take a risk regardless of computer company. Dell doesn't make the harddrives. They purchase them and install them.

We (where I work) used to be IBM laptop people. We called them 'Stinkpads' because they were so bad. Then we tried X, Y, and Z and now are on Dells. My latitude D610 is a rock solid laptop right now, and the desktops we're using are pretty good as well.

But again, since Dell simply buys parts and puts them together, it's not like you're guaranteed anything in the future.

I should have said a needless risk. It doesn't matter whether they buy them or build them, they're still failing. They seem to be buying inferior ones. But, perhaps our experiences are isolated, and in any case they've probably switched to another type of hard drive since I bought my Dell.

Anyways, I'm not trying to be argumentative here or start a Dell jihad. Love the blog.

Dell Jihad? So, if you use Thinkpads, you're an Infi-dell

You may groan loudly now ;)

And again, Dells work for me because that's what we use where I work, so repairs and spare parts will be easier to come by if there are issues.

Haha. Groan? Nah, actually, I thought that was pretty clever.

You might try a free hard drive diagnostic software package, you might be able to nail the problem down. I can't recommend any in particular, but I Googled and there are plenty. One that came up in my search:

Dude, skip the dell.

Go with an IBM thinkpad!!!

BELIEVE ME... It'll save you tons of time and aggrevation!!!

Nah, gonna stick with Dell. My work uses Dell so that means replacement parts are.... um... cheap.
