John Stossel on gun control myths
Talking to prisoners about guns emphasizes a few key lessons. First, criminals don't obey the law. (That's why we call them "criminals.") Second, no law can repeal the law of supply and demand. If there's money to be made selling something, someone will sell it. {emph. mine}
Gun laws have no effect on those who chose to not obey the law in the first place. Anti gun nuts just cannot seem to grasp this basic concept. Making it hard for law abiding citizens to get guns does nothing to lower the number of guns in the hands of criminals. The only way to do that is to actually lower the number of guns, and good luck getting the criminals to voluntarily turn theirs in.
Again, I have never, ever attacked anyone with a firearm. I have pulled in self-defense twice and luckily never had to fire a shot. My gun doesn’t talk to me in the middle of the night. It doesn’t tell me to kill. That particular skill was taught to me via the Marines, not Smith & Wesson.
I wanted to know why the laws weren't working, so I asked the experts. "I'm not going in the store to buy no gun," said one maximum-security inmate in New Jersey. "So, I could care less if they had a background check or not."
So, to those who believe in gun control, how does a 5 day waiting period and / or background check protect you from those who don’t follow the law? How does denying me, a law abiding citizen who will never threaten you, a firearm make you safer from criminals who aren’t under such constraints?
A study funded by the Department of Justice confirmed what the prisoners said. Criminals buy their guns illegally and easily. The study found that what felons fear most is not the police or the prison system, but their fellow citizens, who might be armed. One inmate told me, "When you gonna rob somebody you don't know, it makes it harder because you don't know what to expect out of them
From the horse’s mouth folks. They don’t fear the cops, they fear you might have a weapon. And the harder it is for you and me to obtain and legally carry said weapons make these guys lives much easier.
What makes this simple bit of logic so hard to follow for some people?
