Sharp as a Marble

So, I do a lot of my work at home. In the past I logged into a Metaframe (a remote control type application) session, then from that box, remotely controlled my desktop computer. I had to do this because it was the only way I could connect to the databases, web servers, and have my development environment available. However, remote controlling a remote controlled session is rather bulky, slow, and prevented me from working on particular files with any sort of ease.

So my company has a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that would allow me to connect from practically anywhere just like I was plugged in locally. So I requested a laptop to replace my desktop so that I could work from home when needed.

I get the laptop. Decent one too. A little under-powered for a developer, but nothing I compile takes more than a few minutes anyway so it’s not like I’m going to be twiddling my thumbs more or something. Maxed out on memory, DVD-RW, dual monitor support for the 19” LCD, docking station, extra battery, extra power supply, leather bag, basically all the bells and whistles. I checked out the same laptop for my wife and with all that, the damn thing cost near $3k.

But the higher ups won’t allow developers on the VPN. They say we don’t need it and that they didn’t budget for us. So, now that my laptop goes home with me, I have nothing to log into to fix any issues that might arise. The very reason I requested (and the reason the request was approved!) has now actually worked in the opposite direction.

Not that I care. I can’t wait until my boss tells the VP that we weren’t able to fix a critical bug over the weekend because there was no physical way to do so.

They wouldn't let us vpn in until after the first crisis either. Now we can. In their defense, the licenses are extremely expensive.

You can always lock it in your desk at night. :o)

Well, that would make sense if they didn't purchase it for the field service techs who need 0 access to local resources anyway (they can get all their files through the portal. I should know, I wrote the apps).

Plus several developers already The "policy" is whatever is up someone's ass that day, it seems.

So you're saying you want to be on call and do off-hours firefighting? Because we can switch.

No, it's that I have more work to do than I can cram into an 8 hour day and with the newborn, I absolutely have to leave on time.

So I'll just keep sliding further and further behind.

Lovely.
