Camp Crawford, Tx – As the deluge of tears threatened to wash away the handful of protesters left, Cindy Sheehan spoke of the horrors the recent flood coverage by the media has had on her cause. Wearing a ‘No Flood For Oil’ t-shirt, Sheehan spoke to a throng of two or three journalism students about the aftermath of the recent Katrina coverage.
“It has been awful,” Sheehan said, barely able to conceal the pain in her voice. “This morning, I woke up and was going to plant another white cross and privately grieve over the loss of my son, Corey…. or Casey… whatever his name was, and there was only one or two cameramen available to cover my private moment. Then, I turned on MSNBC and CNN, thinking I would be able to watch my daily grief session at least a dozen times before my early afternoon nap, but instead they were covering something else. I’m not sure what it was, but there was a lot of unhappy people so it must have been Bush’s fault. Or the Jews.”
As hurricane Katrina headed towards New Orleans, reporters at Camp Casey were given a mandatory evacuation notice. Despite repeated government warnings that the increased pressure of media reporters could cause widespread damage, many reporters refused to leave. However, the siren call of catastrophe became too great to withstand and eventually the rip tide of media sensationalism pulled even the most experienced camera crew away.
“It was harrowing,” explained one bystander who watched the torrent of reporters as they flooded out. “One cameraman hopped in his van to leave and the coverage vacuum pulled Rev. Sharpton into his limousine and to the airport before we could get another shot of him crying with Cindy.”
Satellite images taken yesterday stand in stark contrast to those taken only days before. Long gone is the lush country side filled with crowds of media vans, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young concertgoers, Code Pink demonstrations, and MoveOn & Stormfront representatives. All that appears now is a barren wasteland, littered with thousands of empty water bottles, Free Mumia pamphlets, a few port-a-johns, and one lonely woman standing outside of her trailer.
Sheehan was recently downgraded from a ‘Category 5’ activist to ‘Liberal Depression’.
