Sharp as a Marble

So I watched House of Flying Daggers this weekend. It’s a good movie albeit a little slow at times. Martial arts movies are a lot like pornos – nobody cares about dialog, they just want to see the action. HoFD relied heavily on the story and while enjoyable, I guess I was more in the mood for a heck of a lot more action.

The fight scenes that it did have were phenomenal, don’t get me wrong. Totally enjoyable on that level, it’s just that sometimes the in-between times were a little too long. The scenery was beautiful as well as the costumes. I especially loved the uniforms of the women in the HoFD gang.  Ziyi Zhang was pretty in her ‘No, really! I am legal. I swear!’ kind of way.

Definitely worth the rental fee. I give it 4 out of 5 marbles.

I liked it even more than you. I have a thing about contemplative scenes in Chinese films. I also loved the colors.

But the flyin' Chinese people is always the best reason to watch films like that.

A coworker fell in love with the film, and has watched it many times. I think she buys kleenex in bulk now.

For colors, you need to watch Hero.

Best use of colors in a film ever. Didn't even realize it until it was over what I was watching.

And PLENTY of Fu in that one ;)

House of Flying Daggers definitely comes in a distant third compared to Hero and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, in my opinion.

Spoiler Alert:
Chinese storytelling is dodgy at best, from a western perspective (plot developments that go nowhere, abrupt endings, nonsensical denouements, etc), but the whole movie builds up to this grand confrontation between the govt and the House, and then you not only don't ever find out how that turns out, you never see any of it. Those questions should not have been raised if they weren't going to be answered.

I've seen Hero, and thought of it while I was watching House of Flying Daggers. I really loved the color tricks in that one too, as well as the differing perspectives of all the characters.

Ms. Zhang has been a busy little bee in all these movies.

I've heard that the remedy for this is watching the Jet Li flick UNLEASHED. Apparently, there's tons of FU and not much KUNG. Just a thought.
