Let me say that if you’ve not seen Batman Begins, you need to go on an extended lunch break and see the movie today. Then again tonight.
I was pleasantly surprised that they managed to completely ignore the previous 4 attempts at the Batman legacy and really focused on telling a compelling story. They actually managed to make it more believable instead of the whole ‘Bruce Wayne is a billionaire as well as a genius who builds all this high tech stuff by himself’’ schtick.
It was perfectly dark. A bit frightening at times, but the actors really gave the impression of deep down despair. I could have done without Katie Holmes. She was there to provide the union required nipple shots that all movies apparently must have. But she’s annoying in my opinion, and didn’t add much to the film at all.
I knew Gary Oldman was in the flick and as usual he doesn’t look anything like himself playing the part of Jim Gordon (not commissioner yet). Every movie that man is in he seems to be heavily make-upped. But he’s a fantastic actor nonetheless.
What I really liked about the movie is not just how they left it open for sequels (the audience roared with approval at the hint at the end of the movie of the next villain), but how they explained how any new criminals would pop up.
I give it 4 1/2 marbles out of 5 (subtracted points for Katie ‘My Nipples Are Small, but Tom Likes To Play With Them’ Holmes). Worth a second viewing.
