With all this Terri Schiavo stuff going on, I honestly was curious how a feeding tube worked. Was an existing orifice used such as the nose or mouth, or did the doctors make an incision in the abdominal wall and go directly to the stomach*?
Well, I did a Google search to find out. Of course, when you search Google, it tries to place ads that are relevant to what you were looking for. I got this....

*It so happens that short term needs are through the nose, but those who need it longer usually have it inserted into the stomach.
