John Cole seems to have benefited from a sleep test. This is very heartening for me since I've got an appointment in Feb. with a doctor to look at my sleeping problem.

My problem is that I can't get enough sleep. I can sleep 12 hours and feel like shit. I get 8+ hours every night and I can barely function sometimes. I've often fallen asleep driving home from work. If I don't constantly move, it's likely that I'll fall asleep.

I also get headaches. Constantly. 2 or 3 a week, most often on weekends. It's said that sleep apnea can cause them. Add the fact that my brain chemicals are all out of whack and my panic disorder and I'm pretty groggy and grumpy a lot. It's also said that heartburn can be caused by it too.

My wife has to kick me out of the room for snoring quite a bit. I toss and turn and wake up often throughout the night. While I don't recall waking up gasping for air, it's possible I do.

The odd thing is that so many of the symptoms I have I've always attributed to just getting older. I'm hoping and praying that everything is actually caused by the lack of quality sleep and that I can change my life back to the good old days where 9:30 wasn't considered a 'late night'.

Anyone else have any experience in this?

I had that problem. Turned out it was from reading John Kery's press releases.

Seriously, I don't have that issue myself, but know several who do; For sth most part, htey deal wiht a version of sleep apnia.

My doc thinks panic disorder -- not to mention what we used to call manic depression, now known by the bloodless term bipolar disorder -- is inherited. Wondering whether you have some of this in the family?

I do and mostly work around it by leaving the TV on all night and clicking around from channel to channel during the inevitable sleepless moments during the night. Most shows out there are so boring that they put me right to sleep. Once in awhile, I stumble upon a great C-Span or History Channel presentation and learn something of value. Have even found grist for my blogmill in those hours of the wolf from time to time.

Sleep apnea is a whole other thing. Don't know much about that.

Yup. Mother, possibly father. I have the whole "bipolar" thing 'cept I suffer from the mania much more than the depression. And let me tell you, having my personality and panic disorder is like matches and gasoline.

My problem isn't sleeplessness, I don't EVER have that. It's that I can't get enough sleep. I'd love to go back to my insomnia riddled college days, but I have a feeling that had more to do with my Blood Alcohol Level than any sort of disorder.

Hey, just a heads up -- my dad (66 y/o) had the same exact problems, after sleep test, they discovered it was sleep apnea. He was snoring, tossing, etc, would stop breathing (which is what kept my mom up more than the snoring).

They gave him this positive pressure machine (face mask connected to a reverse vacuum), now when he wakes up, he's alert, his skin isn't as grey, he doesn't fall asleep on our couch constantly during visits, concentrates better.

Only prob is, when he travels, he has to bring it with him, but I suppose it's worth it. And insurance will usually pay for the thing. Good luck.
