Why do people recycle glass?
Are we running out of sand or something?

Should we start a new environmental campaign similar to the "Plant a Tree" theme from several years ago? We'll need a catchprase. Hmmm...

Beyond that. Plastics are just a byproduct of the petroleum industry. BYPRODUCT! Monomers pluss additives makes Polymers!

because it is cheaper to recycle glass than to process fresh sand. this is why glass and steel are the most heavily recycled things around: it is much cheaper to reshape the correct material than to extract the correct material from all the dirt and cruft that comes out of the ground.

Oh Really? I've heard nothing but problems about using recycled glass. Heck, even the website Recycling Today discusses the fact that it costs more to recycle than to produce.

Penn and Teller did an episode of BullSh**t on this very topic. My own knowledge is limited but from what I know of local city contracts with recycling companies and what little I've read recycling is a huge fraud industry. Another activity so hippies can feel good about themselves while eating grapes in February and decrying global markets. In other words… Hypocrisy? Stupidity? I say a healthy mix of both.

I stand corrected: glass is not in the same category as steel. Thank goodness for critical review.

Steel I understand is good to recycle, but that the average household doesn't turn out enough to make up for the costs associated with picking it up. The best place for recycled steel is in demolished buildings and auto graveyards and the such. I've not done exhaustive research, bur it appears that most recycling hurts the environment more due to the amount of effort (and fuel) needed to pick it up, sort, clean, melt and reprocess.
