Sharp as a Marble

Taking a cue from Spoons and Jon Henke (of Q and O blog), I am going to voice my displeasure at a particular political group by the way I vote at the polls. Unlike Spoons and Henke (whom I have a lot of respect for both, mind you) I will not not vote to punish the GOP but I shall, for the first time ever, vote entirely R this election. Let me explain my reasoning.

Both Spoons and Henke feel that the GOP has moved so far away from true conservatism that it needs it's pee-pee spanked at the polls, so they are not going to vote (or vote None of the Above). I disagree with this as it will not inform the GOP of why the vote was not cast, only that a vote was not cast for the Republican. We live in a Republic and if you want your elected representatives to do what you want them to, you have to let them know what it takes to get your vote and that you will not give it to them come election time. Simply holding back a vote isn't going to cut it.

Yet, I respect their choices while respectfully disagreeing.

Now, in a fit of blatant hypocrisy, I'm going to do something similar. This election cycle I am going to punish the Democrats. As much as I'd like to see the Republicans go back to the Small Government principles that I feel are important, I feel this election is too vital to give to the Democrats. And I'm not talking about terrorism.

The behavior from this election has been so abhorrent (on both sides, mind you, but a lot, lot, lot worse from the left) that in no way can I allow such trash to be rewarded with victory. The Democrats must be told this is not the way to balance power in the United States.

I seriously doubt that America is going to come through this election unscathed. I mean, voter fraud is rampant, the Democrats are already trying to get people to think that disenfranchisement is already happening, and Kerry has lawyers already drawing up law suits in Florida. Folks, if you have to cheat, don't you think maybe you're message isn't what people want? Why force it on them? This is America, damn it! We created this place to avoid people like you.

If either side legally challenges the results, it will create even more of a divide. Our system of voting will never be trusted again and it's not like we've a lot of faith in it now anyways. Less people will voluntarily follow the leadership of elected officials as they will question their validity.

Look, I didn't vote for Clinton. Neither time. But I always considered him the legitimate POTUS and respected him in that capacity. I never wanted him assassinated, I never claimed he stole an election because the rules were followed and he got more votes. Period. I couldn't stand him and I know I found myself hoping the they'd find that Foster guy with Bill's fingerprints immediately below the hole in his noggin. And I was ashamed at myself for thinking that and kept it quiet. But in today's political climate, nothing is held back, no matter how insane.

Now, I've never voted straight ticket in my life. And, a Bush win or loss, after this election I am changing my party affiliation to "Independent" since I'm not thrilled with Republicans any more. But this election I plan on punching R after R after R because it is my sincerest hope that if Jon and Spoons are correct, I can send a message to the Democrats that enough is enough.

I may change my mind (and I probably should) by election day. If anyone wishes to convince me otherwise, my ears are open.

I voted straight ticked last week just as you are considering doing. It was painfull, but necessary for exactly the reasons you stated. I suspect there are quite a few people that will do the same thing.

Courage! (sorry, couldn't resist)

I wish it were easier, because I've voted Democrats many times before. Yes, never for President nor Senators / Congresscritters, but plenty of local posts (I feel Democrats do better in smaller environments, closer to home).

Again though, after the election I will be one of those coveted "Independents" everybody thinks the world of.

From SAAM, on voting techniques. From Jeff G., on the New York Times' latest non-news attempt to get John Kerry elected. And the important one, a kicker from Protein Wisdom on the potential Death of a Nation: Im feeling queasy....

A few months back, I was all set not to vot for any candidate for president because I was unhappy about Bush's support of illegal immigration. This even though the democrats are no better on the issue. After hearing Kerry talk out of both (or is it all four) sides of his mouth on every conceivable issue, and after all the break-ins at republican headquarters all over the country, after the slanted news from the MSM: I'm voting straight republican.

You go boy! If we want the Democrats to get rid of the top echelon of nuts and get back to being a party you can be proud to be a part of they need to find out middle american Democrats don't agree with their tactics and most of their ideas.

And then we start a grassroots campaign to ensure the Republicans get the message too. If the tables were turned, I'm positive "my side" would be playing just as dirty.

Hi Robb,

Sorry to disagree. Although my personal inclinations are along the same line, I will probably be voting for at least one Democrat this year. The GOP candidate is just untrustworthy.

And I'll definitely be voting Libertarian as often as I can justify it. Their position on the War on Terror is just plain wrong, but they get so much else right that I'll support them where and when I can.

But W is getting my vote at the top of the ticket this year.

The only way to get smaller government is to vote for candidates that take smaller government seriously.

Regards,

Don't expect me to argue, I'm doing the same thing. I pretty much agree with you about the fiscal stuff and I'm only marginally socially conservative. But the Democrats have really really digusted me over the last few years. They have gone nuts. I'm a registered independent and I'm voting straight R's purely as a repudiation of the Dems and Kerry.

While Bush has been a disappointment to small-gov't conservatives, keep in mind if we hadn't gotten Bush, we'd have Gore. And instead of liberating two countries, we'd have sprayed a few Tomshawks around, hired 200,000 more gov't security guards, and had mandatory Islamic sensiticity classes. Saddam and Osama would be laughing at us from their palaces instead of being dead and in prison.

I'm with you as well. I generally don't vote Democratic anyway, except for some occasional local offices, and some years I sit out all together (like 2000), but this year I will be voting, and it will be straight R or as close to it as possible. There are areas where I'm disappointed with Bush, though I'm at nowhere near Spoons' level, and I would probably be indifferent to him as a president if it weren't for 911 or the war on terror. However, as obnoxious and disgraceful as Democrats have been this election cycle I have no choice but to hope they receive a hearty spanking at the polls so bad that they'll have to rethink many of their positions and loyalties (although I honestly don't think it's going to happen). Hell, maybe they'll even become a reasonably hawkish, liberatiarian-ish party (I know, I'm dreaming). But I'll worry about dealing with Republicans on another day.
