Admitting we no longer get what the kids are up to is essential to avoiding embarassment. To them, we don't even exist.

When it comes to failing to do this, the worst example I can think of is the punkers. They tried to remain cool for about 15 years. I'd guess that's about 11 years longer than hipness based on mere social style can survive.
