Sharp as a Marble

Well, it's always been kind of understood that I'm somewhat of a conservative, but after the debates last night, it's now out in the open at work that I am voting Bush. My boss, my boss' boss, and most of the people around me (minus 2 or so) are diehard Democrats bordering on the Church of Michael Moore members. The hostility is now open.

Luckily, I just had a 45 minute, heated, but rather good conversation with the director since he's the major Bush hater. Claims Bush is running the economy into the ground because of this and that. What's so odd is we both look at the exact same things and see them completely different. I started my own business because the economy was picking up, he sees it as a shame I have to work 2 jobs.

It's so depressing. Life isn't meant to be this miserable where talking about politics ruins your day. I'm not just dying to go home, to see my daughter and wife and just relax in the knowledge that that is what life is really all about.

And my beer should be melted by now. That's good too...

Ace of spades has a good post that touches on this, your blog audience can serve as a replacement for the smaller group real life people that you could argue with. Real life people have know public postions to defend in commited groups, here you face them with your arguments in private, where they can confess error to themselves

"The great thing about having a blog which a good number of people read is that I can now pose as one of those sweet-natured apolitical types in my real life"

Or in my case I have a relative active in the Kerry conspiracy, and confused enough to think he's conservative. I've made no progress with him, but have done enough online to overcome his efforts and turn his state red.

I came up against the very thing perhaps 20 years ago in my capacity then as publications and publicity director of a small New England art school during a photography workshop that brought top photographers and art historians to our school to discuss this and that. The moment of truth came when someone from the audience prefaced her question to the panel with "we who have all our politics in the right place." My jaw dropped and has been in dropped position every since. These people have put their minds on automatic pilot.

Sissy, though we blush we must praise her confession. Her politics are indeed in the right place.

First: Screw your boss. I used to be neck high in NYC financial circles, and, not withstanding the corporate nature, it is a fairly liberal climate. That's why I went independant.
Second: Never, ever doubt yourself. Sure, every now and then do a gut check. But never listen when some yutz murmers "he's a fool."

Sharp, I find that arguing politics with people is pointless and yields lasting acrimony. I say my piece only on the web now, and usually only pick a bone with moderates or other right-of-centerists like myself. Disputing issues with liberals seems an absolute waste of time, so I don't even bother.

OT
Congratulations on your site's original, engaging graphics. I'm considering taking up blogging (no, not a news site - there are so many good ones) and I'm inspired by your fresh approach. I hope I can do something that engages the visitor the way your fine presentation does.

Yeah, I know, I opened my own can of worms. But I really want to generate debate where we can try to get past the ultra-hatred that permeates where I work. I have a hard time with social programs, so that sets me far apart from many of the people here (I'd be more for them if at least 90% of the money we spent actually went to the people we're trying to help).

OT - Thanks, I appreciate it. My format turned out to be, well, me. If you read this site, you know me. Period. I can't do real in depth news because I don't have the time to do the research needed to back everything up, and humor is relatively easy for me. I'd also blog about DNS lookups, the value of referential integrity in databases, and best practices on programming in a stateless environment, but somehow I feel I'd have an audience of "me".

Glad to entertain, it's a side effect of what I do. The blog is my own creation in some aspects. I've written a lot of the code myself, I host the site at home, etc. It's a cool hobby.

Sharp, hang in there. I fully agree with Lastango. It is useless to get through to them (liberals). I am going to tell you a secret. Because of this election I am sooo stressed that after years of not smoking I have started again. HOW SICK AM I??? I for one can not wait for the next month to be gone and this election over. Sharp, just keep telling yourself that hopefully you will get the last laugh on November 3 when you have to face all those LIBS at work. The debate last night drove me crazy!!! If only the President could just be a little "mean" like Kerry has no trouble being. Also as far as the media goes, if I could get away with it i would love to go into every newsroom and .....you guess the rest.
