Sharp as a Marble

Have you seen it yet? The new Planned Parenthood t-shirt? It's so darling with a catchy little slogan on the front. It says "I had an abortion"*. Cute eh?

Those four words illustrate why I am rabidly pro-life. It's no longer a weighty decision to these monsters, it's a catch phrase, a conversation piece, a badge of honor. Instead of having to deal with the consequences of taking a life, it's now a Hallmark moment. Happy Abortion Day! Junior would have been 5! Think of all the money you saved on food!

Sick.

I used to be reluctantly pro-choice. I figured that such a horrible event may have times where it might be necessary (and I still do). Life is precious, and the decision to end it should never have gotten to the point where it's a slogan on a t-shirt. However, I realized that I couldn't make a blanket ban on abortion because there might be instances where it was the preferable solution to an otherwise horrible outcome. I was reluctant because I was always afraid that some day, the gravity of the procedure would be so trivialized that we as a society would no longer consider human life important when inconvenient. That day is fast approaching.

I question those who rushed into the war in Iraq. It took me quite a while to accept that toppling Saddam using combat was going to be beneficial in the long run. Life should be important to all those who are lucky enough to have it and we should all think long and hard before deciding that any life is worth taking. Those who have no respect for life are the true monsters in this world, and that comes from someone who supports the death penalty.

Planned Parenthood doesn't give a shit about women's rights. All they seem to care about is the killing of unborn children. Abortions on demand! Dan's Discount D&X - Get a free set of Ginsu knives with each procedure. I scoff at the whole "women's right to do what she wants with her body" bullshit because no one seems up in arms the way they are about abortion when it comes to prostitution and baring breasts.

I am not against all abortions. Like all choices requiring taking of a life, sometimes it is necessary. But knowing Planned Death is an actual organization hell bent on flat-lining fetuses and then celebrating it as 'choice' makes me hard pressed to believe that enough people have any humanity left in them.

While I was writing this article, I took a break and shared a Philly Swirl Swirl Stix with my daughter and enjoyed her laughter. It made the rest of this even harder to write.

The "women's right to her body" argument has no merit anyway. Any woman who is able to understand the concept of sex has the intelligence to understand that they could become pregnant, and should have to deal with the consequences of their actions. Women who have sex are implicitly waiving that right to their body, just like anyone who eats mcdonalds understands that they might get fat from doing so or smokers understand that they may get cancer. Anyone who argues otherwise is simply rationalizing. The sad fact is, in today's society, the message is that a fetus is only considered alive if the mother wants it. Scott Peterson can be tried for double murder for the death of his wife and her unborn child, yet partial birth abortions are still widely considered legal if not acceptable. Nobody wants to take responsiblity for their actions and accept the consequences nowdays. If the legislators would outlaw abortion, then not only would it cut down on the amount of casual unprotected sex, but would consequently cut down on the spread of STD's. The bottom line is, though, that it all boils down to taking responsibility and facing the consequences. Abortion is simply a rationalized cop-out.

And the clearest example? The lady that kicked all this debate off, who was pregnant with triplets. The one she wanted is a "baby", the ones she didn't --even though it was the SAME FRIKKEN PREGNANCY-- are mere lumps of tissue.

It makes me sick, it truly does.

I guess I'm still reluctantly pro-choice. -ish.

What I'd really *like* to do is if it is supposedly a woman's choice about her own body, then make sure it's her own body doing it to her. In other words, no doctors, just the pill. That way the baby dies by her own hands, not in some manner she can try to justify as being someone else's doing. Incidentally, it also dovetails nicely into my idea that it should only be allowed to women responsible enough to have considered it beforehand and to know within 2 weeks whether or not they actually are pregnant. If you wait 12 weeks to do something about it, you weren't really being responsible in the first place, were you?

Like I say on my blog, the thing that makes me the angriest is that the only reason abortion is really an issue is because Hollywood and liberal ideology have successfully obscured/erased the natural connection between sexual intercourse and pregnancy. If we put half as much time and effort into making it clear that no matter what, there is *always* a chance of pregnancy...maybe less people would find themselves in the situation of wanting an abortion.

...or at least have less of an excuse for their immaturity and irresponsibility.

If you think Hollywood is solely responsible, you should read Reverend Donald Sensing's view on the subject (http://www.donaldsensing.com/2004/07/link-by-request.html).

Granted he's talking about gay marriage, it still shows a fairly valid point on what has happened to us as a society when it comes to reproduction. It may have a lot to do with this type of behavior.

No, Hollywood isn't solely responsible...but it still advances its view of sex and intimacy despite how dangerous it is to engage in extra-marital sex. They just have a different view of life, and it shows in the term "Hollywood romance" and the shortth (opposite of length) of the typical Hollywood marriage.
I could easily agree if someone argued that the pill was the single most devestating blow to traditional marriage and moral standards. Of ocurse, I could easily agree if someone also pointed to No-Fault divorces. I'd hesitate to put much blame on the Kinsey sex report. Feminism itself shoulders its share of the burden. I'm just particularly irritated with Hollywood, because they have the tools and delivery system to persuade and convince, heck, seduce!, more than any other amoral industry just about ever. "American Pie" did more damage than 100 articles in a newspaper, I think.
