The Puppy Blender opines about Orrin Hatch's latest travesty
The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider a bill Thursday that would hold technology companies liable for any product they make that encourages people to steal copyright materials.
Critics say the bill would effectively outlaw peer-to-peer networks and prohibit the development of new technologies, including devices like the iPod. The Inducing Infringement of Copyrights Act (S. 2560) was introduced last month by Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), head of the Senate Judiciary Committee. The legislation would hold a company liable that "intentionally induces" a person to infringe copyright.
To which Glenn asks (indirectly):
Personally, I'm mystified as to why Republicans want to help the entertainment industry.
Duh. Maybe it's because they're not really Republicans? It's this kind of crap that makes me 'not toe the party line' so to speak.
I believe in small government. Not so small to be Libertarian, but small enough to the point where I can do as I damn well please inside my own home. I like lower taxes and the free market. I detest 'licensing' of any profession (and before you bitch about physicians needing licenses, I ask you, when was the last time you verified your doctor's credentials?) and feel the best thing the Government can do to better our society is to get out of the way of businesses. I believe that in a country as rich as ours, no person should ever go hungry or not be provided critical medical care and that the best way to screw that up would be to let the government force people into helping others at gunpoint.
These clowns who supposedly represent you and me don't give a damn about the (D) or (R) next to their names. If it puts money in their pocket, they're all for it. And since most people froth at the mouth when it comes to the president yet couldn't tell you who their representatives are (both nationally and locally), they're not under pressure to act like they're supposed to.
That, Glenn, is why. And until we start kicking out those in office who aren't adhering to the principles of those who elected them, be prepared for more Hatch level assinity.
