Bobby, let me tell you a little story. When I was nineteen years old, my job in the Marine Corps was Fire Control – aka if you could pull a trigger and have a happy BOOM result from it, I was responsible for ensuring it functioned properly. So as a young, nineteen year male, even younger and more prone to impulses, the USMC trusted me not only to sit in the cockpit of a fully armed (700 rounds of 20mm depleted uranium + 8 T.O.W. missiles) Cobra helicopter, but did so knowing I could activate and fire the entire payload.
What set me apart from the people you are discussing is that the USMC isn’t an organization that cottons thugs like the NFL does. No amount of armament in my hands was ever a threat to anyone. These people you are talking about are dangerous to others with their bare fists and nothing else.
It’s not the caliber of the gun in the hand of the person, it’s the caliber of the person holding the gun. Or knife. Or sap. Or stick.

I don't think they are all thugs and killers. My nephew in law (my niece's husband) is a defensive end for the bronco's and is a real live boy scout. Must be the whole Wisconsin farm boy thing. Don't generalize
When I was 19 through 22, I carried an M16/M203 with a full days worth of ammo for both and stood around Nuclear Weapons.
Sometimes I got lucky and they gave me a M60 and a couple boxes of ammo.
Fortunately I wasn't an NFL snowflake with no character and self control or West Germany would have had to redo a major portion of its map.
Nor did any of the other members of my squadron and there was a whole lot of drinking, women problems and the sort of emotions and crap you put up with as a younger adult figuring out the world.

I did a triple-take yesterday as I read about a new report from Penn State (yeah, that one) about discrimination against black male athletes in Division I Universities. Apparently a very small percentage of the football players and basketball players graduate. My hand to Bog, I thought it was satire. Since when do D1 universities sift football and basketball recruits for academic ability vs. athletic prowess?
For example, UCOnn does not recruit basketball players for their academic skills, last time I checked. And how many of them graduate vs. going to the pros after one or two years? That alone would seriously drag down the D1 graduation rate.
And they wonder why some of the people who get to the NFL and NBA have problems with maturity and self control, all other factors (excess self-esteem, pharmaceutical use) aside.

If I said this about women serving in the military, I'd be sexist. About minorities in the military, I'd be racist. If I said it about muslims, someone would threaten to murder me.

Heck I was shooting competitively with a pellet gun when I was 13, and recreationally with a hunting rifle by the time I was 14 (and I live in a country without a second amendment equivalent, gun control is STRICT). There was never a chance that I'd hurt anyone with them, and I was on the recieving end of bullying in those days.
Not saying anything that hasn't been alluded to already but Costas couldn't be further off the mark. Though this could be true for any unit I was in, ALL of them had thugs, idiots, muscle-heads, guys with bad tempers and just about every shade of guy a pearl-clutching gungrabber would crap themselves over if they knew that they had access to firearms. But, hmmm... not a single one of them murdered their wives. Moreover, even with the unbelievable stress of deployment and operations, none of them did anything like that. Costas is an idiot.

I'll second everything already said about soldiers and Marines, Coasties, Swabs and blue suiters - Even if they have not been exposed to the concept of duty, honor, and responsibility in civil life, they are TAUGHT and SOCIALIZED to think and behave like honorable men ( and women)in trying circumstances, to think of themselves in the "Mission, Men, Self" hierarchy of priorities. They become warriors, regardless of MOS or rate; they are willing to stand between the bad guys and he innocent, and to put the needs of others FIRST.
This is where they differ from the thug. They reject thug culure.
The NFL and popular culture does not sanction or speak out against " thug culture" prevalent in poor urban minority areas.
Abuse of women, theft, killing, all are celebrated in much of the music; self- centered, spoiled, entitled behavior is encouraged.
The fact a man makes it to the NFL doesnt change his character; scum who can play football well and receive enormous salaries for doing so remain scum.
A gun didnt murder that woman- a thug did. The thug's employer HAPPENED to be the NFL, but it could have just as well been Rufus the Crack Dealer.
Costas cannot see the forest for the trees- character counts. A Thug wll act like a thug. A warrior doesnt.
