Saw this over at Dean's World and I had almost forgot about it. Spaceship One is ready for takeoff tomorrow morning at 6:30 AM!
This will be a historic day. I have longed for the space program07.hmove away from the government tit and into the private sector. Without all the b.s. bureaucracy, space flight for normal people like you or me will be feasible. One day, I may even be able to feel the wonder of 0g! (Yeah, I know it's not TRUE weightlessness, but let a guy dream ok?)
This, of course, is happening for the Ansari X-Prize which is a $10,000,000 prize for the first company to launch a piloted, privately funded spaceship able to carry 3 people to 100 kilometers (62.5 miles) above Earth, return safely, and repeat with the same ship within 2 weeks.
Being that each shuttle launch costs approximately a billion dollars, the $20 million price tag for SS1 is chicken feed.
May God watch over Douglas B. Shane, Peter Siebold, Brian Binnie, and Michael W. Melville, the pilots for Spaceship One. Best of luck boys!
Melville did it! Wow!
I also found out that this was a dry run, that in order to qualify for the x-prize, you have to have all 3 seats filled. Hell, I'll volunteer if they need one!
