Sean over at An NC Gun Blog has been doing some great work lately picking up stories of criminals. Unlike the Brady Bunch, he doesn’t seem to cherry pick them either, but the overall trend definitely seems that those who commit violent acts (with guns or without) tend to have extensive criminal histories. Not always, but it is generally the case.
It’s a great illustration of the mindset of “It’s not the tool, it’s the wielder” that I preach here constantly. If Sean’s not in your reader, you might want to change that!

There was a study of which I read (and this was several years ago; probably mid-'90s...) on what percentage of murderers already had an extensive rap sheet, and the number was pretty staggering.
I think somewhere in excess of 80% of people found standing over a cooling body (metaphorically speaking) were already on a first-name basis with the justice system.

I've been focusing entirely on North Carolina crimes because I know how to look up NC criminal records online. I'd like to see more bloggers do the same thing with their home states.
