Sharp as a Marble - Too grumpy to blog

GTI

Someone had hit a traffic cone this morning that threw it into the middle of the highway. The truck in front of me had enough clearance and just went over it and it caught me by surprise.

Smashed up the grill on my GTI.

All cosmetic damage and it would probably cost less to pay for the repairs out of pocket than the change in my rates should I have my insurance company fix it.

HEY. Just weld up some angle iron and make a custom grill. A shot of spray paint should make it look awesome!

I kid... Man, that really sucks. I hate when stuff like this happens.

My wife had dropped off her new car to get LoJack installed, and so they gave her a loaner. She merged onto I-5 in Tacoma, and after about a total time of about 5 minutes of having this loaner, some miscreant dropped a half-brick off a pedestrian overpass and it went straight through the windshield. It narrowly missed her, lightly peppered her with glass fragments and completely fractured the windshield so she couldn't see out of it. She was luckily able to get over to the shoulder and then call the dealership to send someone out to fetch her.

Our insurance got to pay for that. The goblin was long gone.

Well, the good news is that the biggest cracked part looks to be a whopping $25. The entire grill is only $125, but that part is fine, it's the honeycomb grill under it as well as the area around the running light being scraped up badly.

That can't cost much either.

I'll use this as an excuse to take the thing to a body shop to get the dings taken out of the door (my daughter has a bad habit of opening her door a bit hard).

I have never understood this (and many another) aspect of automotive insurance in the US.

Why in the name of anything that you hold holy should YOUR rates go up, over something that was plainly NOT YOUR FAULT?

Sendarius, it's all about risk assessment for the insurance companies.

When we sprung a leak under our sink that required replacement of our kitchen counter, I was working at an insurance underwriter company. Everyone there said "Yup, you're going to get dropped as soon as your policy is expired" and sure enough, the insurance company decided there was too much 'risk' in our area.

A big-ass truck as stalking horse or hidey-horse, happened to me too but it was a freaking camshaft, complete with gear attached, and I aws loaded down coming back ffrom racing an Enduro. I tried to roll over it in the center-line but it rolled into the right track and my right front tire caught it good and threw it with full-force into the left-rear, with a hideous clanking of metal and it tore the crap out of my tire in a giant arc on the inside immediately deflating it. I crossed four lanes of traffic swerving with no air and made it to the right side - shaking... And discovered the spare tire was de-flatulated too, and my spindly little can of "Air-Up" wasn't nearly enough for the volume required - so I rolled at 5mph down 2-miles of Interstate to an off-ramp and into service... $200+ and 2-hrs. later I was on my way again. Damn, a camshaft.
