Well, I'll tell you why Nationwide Gun Confiscation won't work. It all comes down to Logistics. Let's do some Math, shall we?

First, you need EVERY Local, State and Federal LEO, including Park Rangers and Prison Guards to "Play." That's about 2 million. Then you would need EVERY member of the Military to join in. That's about 2.4 million, including the Guard and Reserve. So we are up to 4.5 Million. Heck, let's add in all the Private Security Guys and Gals who could be Hired. So we are up to 5 million+.

Now, come up with 4.5 million M4s and M16s, plus a Basic Load Out, "Beans, Bullets and Band-Aids," plus Transportation, Shelter, Fuel, etc.

Now take the time to run them through a Basic "This is How an AR Works" Course of Fire. Granted, probably a Million of the Confiscators won't need it, but how many Cops can Barely Qualify with their Service Pistol, and when was the last time they were at the Range? So factor in Training Time.

Now Distribute them to 80 million homes with Guns in them. And tell them to take the Guns away. Oh, and do it w/o ANYONE Finding out about it. And keep in Mind, that means NO MILITARY doing their Jobs, NO COPS on the Street,etc all while they are being brought up to speed.

Now, let's say that 90% of those Homes Comply, and the Guns get tossed on the Front Yard. That leaves 8 Million Pissed-Off, Mad-as-Hell-Won't Take It Anymore Patriots screaming "Molan Labe!" as they return Fire.

"But Les! What about the Tanks and the Drones and F-16s!" Well, what about them? Planes NEED an Airstrip to work out of, and there's enough "High Powered Sniper Rifles", er, excuse me Hunting Rifles that can easily reach the Planes from the edge of the Tarmac. Ghillie Suits and Camo, anyone? Tanks need Fuel, Maintenance and a place to Stay and MANPOWER. Same "Sniping Principles" applies. Take out the Crews, the Tanks will just sit there.

So the Bottom Line is this: Yes, I can see some Fanatic Police Uber-Fascist Gun Control SWAT teams being formed up, but to get ALL the People I've mentioned above to VOLUNTEER to go after their Neighbors and Families just to make Feinstein Happy? Hell, half of them would join the Resistance!

And as for the Uber-Fascists, how many Homes will they be able to Hit before the Word Spreads and they end up like the 7th Cavalry at the Little Big Horn? Then what's the Gooberment going to do? Nuke Akron, Ohio as a "Warning to Comply?" I don't think so.

Oh, and if you think the rest of the World will just kick back and eat the Popcorn, well, I can see all kinds of Crap breaking out while the U.S. is "Distracted." What I fear isn't that they will succeed, but that they will try thinking they can and start the kind of problems you mentioned above. They're not grounded in reality, so they won't even be able to consider what you mentioned as possibilities.

I don't believe there will be an all-out, door-to-door confiscation. That *would* lead to civil war, and they know it. No, I think we'll see a gradual nibbling-away. Go to a range with your AR? Have cops meet you as you leave. Have a friend with a range in the country? Some busy-body hears gunfire and calls 911. Cops wait till you leave, then, "You'll have to come with us." Stop at a gun shop to buy reloading supplies? "Sir, we need to see your papers. Come with us, please." Little bit here, little bit there. Pretty soon, there aren't many of us left, and none one knows where we went. "Oh, Rob? He got picked up by the cops. I knew he was up to something. The guy never wore pants."

We had new gun legislation introduced in Calif. yesterday. This in a state where "assault weapons" are already banned and magazine capacity is limited to 10 rds or less.

Reason given? Keeping up with the New Yorkers.

That still requires compliant cops and a lot of them. It might work in NJ or parts of NY but not out where most of the guns are, where folks are already all on edge. Once word hit the shortwave networks and internet it'd be "on" and the confiscators who tried stealth would be behind the mobilization curve.

Setting aside relatively peaceable armed resistance (Molon Labe type stuff, similar to how the farmers back in the '80s interrupted farm seizures by sheer weight of numbers) you know the actual nuts have contingency plans to take the fight to the powers that be.

Not going to be a lot of enthusiasm among local LEO to "close with" their neighbors if the anti-rights leadership start suffering consequences from the black helicopter types. This is a top-down movement we're facing after all, and there aren't a lot of folks out there leading at the top, comparatively. Most of those down the chain of command would be counting noses and thinking how poorly the Nuremberg defense worked.

I'd wager that a substantial percentage of people who have hopped on the panic train are the ones who until now never owned a firearm, but see this as a last chance opportunity to own that cool 'Call of Duty' gun they're now old enough to buy. The average law-abiding gun owner looks at those folks with a shake of the head at the crazy prices they're paying for those guns.

Those are people who have had no formal instruction in gun safety and became gun owners simply by virtue of having a clean record, a driver's license that says they're over 18 and money to burn.

What I'm looking out for is that these chronologically-adult teacup children who were never told "No" in their lives may freak out and do something stupid if someone tries to take their toy away. You've undoubtedly seen the type, in stores and restaurants, screeching away at the slightest provocation with a sound that's like an icepick to the center of the brain. They won't know until it's too late that throwing that kind of tantrum while waving a firearm is the fast-track to becoming permanently horizontal.

@ Matthew Carberry: I sincerely hope you are right. However, I have met and know enough "only-ones" police officers who would have no problem enforcing this. Extrapolate that into the FBI, ATF, Army and Guard, and pretty soon you have a bigger force than you might have thought. We see all time, postings from people who say they are cops and they will NEVER enforce such illegal and unconstitutional orders, yet in the aftermath of Katrina, there were plenty of officials in and around New Orleans who took up the confiscation flag with no compunction. I mentioned this elsewhere and was told, "True, but those cops were operating with little sleep under extreme stress." I don't care. They still violated people's rights and stole their property. And these could have been the same people protesting two weeks ago that they would never do such a thing.

Both sides are laying their groundwork. We've had Heller and increased concealed carry, plus Top Shot and so on. They've got things like bans on "assault magazines" and universal background checks, plus a usually-compliant media industry.

Our goal is to make the average American familiar with the purpose of the gun and therefore support protecting the RKBA. Their goal is to whittle down the supply of guns and gun owners by taxing, harassing, and shaming.

We're not near the balloon going up; neither side has fully prepared the battlefield to their liking, and so any skirmishes are going to be kept minor.

Cali's CHP sent a bunch of officers to the Katrina affair, and they participated in the gun grabbing, it seems.
BTW, the CHP mandates that all officers must get range time every month, although I don't know which weapons they actually work with on a monthly basis. They mostly don't like going to the range, judging by the fact that dispatch has to badger them to go, and they wait until they are close to running out the clock on the monthly requirement. However, this mandated range time does seem to translate into a higher hit percentage for them. Think they run around 25%, which may be the highest in the nation.

Somewhere between Les and Matthew above, I had a discussion with, well, let's say, "someone," who possessed a certain degree of enthusiasm for the possibility of such a project.

I pointed out that his team is not only outnumbered 80-100X, it's more like 200-300X because a number of his teammates will choose to put themselves on injured reserve right from the outset,and, that everyone in his neighborhood knows which house the potential future Gestapo agent lives in, and which school his kids attend, and that should anything like this actually start the first rule will be that there are no rules, and that while he may be the nicest guy around, he wears the same outfit that door-kickers and dog-shooters do, and from 500 meters you can't tell which is which.

Military organizations figure that a 10% loss of personnel makes that unit combat ineffective. I suspect that will occur in the first 24 hours, and approach 50% within the first week, because, as I 'splained, there is a certain percentage of those 80 million who will not sit quietly at home waiting for the knock on the door. As chiefjaybob mentioned, it will quickly turn into a stealth proposition, with squads surrounding Cletus and Billybob when they leave Uncle Homer's farm or the gun shop/gun range. After a few of those some of the 80 million will start setting up ambushes for the enforcement squads.

It'll get real ugly real fast, and once it starts there will be no reason for it to stop until it's completely finished. I really, really hope those at one end of this sit down and think through what they're doing and consider the consequences. What really worries me is some of them have and they think the consequences are manageable.

If the Feinstiens and Coumos of the world understood basic math, they would know 79,900,000 gun owners have never caused any problems so no new laws are needed.

I do think they will try and do something using the ATF and it will go very wrong. It might be at a 3 gun shoot, or Knob Creek or maybe a local tactical rifle match.

They won't go all SWAT confiscation on us. That's not how they roll. This is a divided and conquer crowd. Just look at history. Ban mags holding over 10 rnds. Did anyone take to the streets over that? Ban mags holding more than 7 rnds. Has there been any MASS protests over that, even in NY? Have the EPA ban lead boolitts, only greenie stuff can be sold. Forget confiscations. People who get and keep major political office aren't stupid where it counts for them.

They want to destroy the firearms industry. They don't want your gun (yeah they do, but know they won't get it unless you step in their traps), they want to make sure it's your last gun and your kids fight over it - assuming it still works and ammo is available.

Not confiscation.
Attrition.

If gun confiscation happens, it won't be a shoot out. You'll get 3 letters of advance notice filled with dire threats. Then a final warning (which will arrive a week late), and two late notices, full of threats. You'll hear that the people running the database can't keep track of how many weapons were turned it, so if you turn in anything and get a clean card, you'll in the record as having no guns. So you drive to the location to find out it was misprinted on the form. You call and google, and find the right place. You'll go through a humiliating pat-down for knives and drugs, but they won't take the gun or ammo you have in your hands - that's somebody else's job; wait in line. You'll wait in line all day long, to be turned away.

You'll come back earlier tomorrow, wait all day, and turn in a gun.

When you turn in your gun, you get a receipt with no unique code. They throw your gun in a completely unsecure box, in an unsecure room. "It's easier now. When the door was locked, the guns would pile up until there was no more room. Now, the boxes are always empty in the morning."

The next week, you get a letter saying that due to a database crash, the government is not sure if you turned in your guns. You'll be ordered to fill out a form, under threat of imprisonment. You'll have the option of affirming that all your guns were turned in, or that they were not.

If you affirm, you'll get the same letter every six months. If you refuse to affirm, you'll go on a waiting list. Two to five years later, a guy with a high school diploma will show up to take your guns. You won't need a gun to kill this guy, a ten-year old could beat this guy down. He won't have your name right and the names of guns on his list won't be the names of guns ever actually made; the records are obviously all mixed up. If you tell him your name is Juan and you're renting from [you], he won't be back for another 2 to 5 years.

If gun confiscation happens, owners of Assault Rifles will popularize the Life Hack, of switching the last numeral of their house number with their neighbors. Not just switching 101 and 102 - they're smart enough to figure that out (with only one wrong raid). Instead, you put 101 on house 103, 103 on house 102, and 102 on house 101. After two failed no-knock raids, the SWAT guys automatically get three days of paid suspension. Just remember to switch the house numbers back before they return.

Look around and the shelves are all bare...
