The good, the bad, and the ugly

The good – Miguel over at Gun Free Zone got a response from Florida State Senator René Garcia regarding the push for gun control. Chalk that one up to another good guy in the fight.

For the bad and the ugly, US Representative Kathy Castor

Thank you for sharing your views on current legislation concerning firearm regulations within the country. I appreciate you taking the time out to share your views with me.

The recent tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, the terrifying Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting, and the horrifying circumstances surrounding Representative Gabrielle Giffords has generated a significant amount of debate with regards to gun control legislation and related policies in our nation. We simply cannot tolerate this type of violence any longer. Historically, gun control issues have always been a controversial matter. Though I believe the Second Amendment acknowledges an individual's entitlement to bear arms, I also encourage rational gun control laws and regulations that help assure the safety of all Americans and keep our communities out of harm's way.

The Constitution has been the cornerstone of our nation for over 200 years, and we must always be mindful of its tenets. Just like the freedom of speech, the right to bear arms has always been subject to reasonable restrictions by Congress. I believe Congress has a responsibility to balance the right-to-bear-arms with the concern for public safety and stability.

Rest assured that I will keep your views in mind should Congress consider related legislation in the future. Again, thank you for contacting me about this important matter. I invite you to visit my website, castor.house.gov, for issues important to you and your family.

Sincerely,

Kathy Castor
United States Representative
Florida, District 11

Emphasis mine. This is akin to saying “I believe in tolerance and unity and that every man and woman should be treated as equals. However, since the number of crimes committed by blacks are higher than any other race, I believe Congress has a responsibility to balance the rights of African Americans  with the concern for public safety”.

It’s horseshit, and we need to call these tyrants out on it.
